The Queen of the South Park animated series, Mary Kay Bergman dwelt in the Scooby Universe for three years, portraying Daphne in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost, Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders, The Scooby-Doo Project (TV Special) and Scooby-Doo! Mystery of the Fun Park Phantom (Video Game).
Mary Kay's portrayal of Daphne is significant because Mary Kay turned Daphne into an adult. No longer would Daphne be a danger-prone meddling kid. Mary Kay's Daphne would even drive the Mystery Machine.
In 1994, Mary Kay taught an animation voice-over course at the Kalmenson and Kalmenson Studios in Burbank, California.1 One of her students was Grey DeLisle Griffin, who succeeded Mary Kay in portraying Daphne.
Regarding the portrayal of Daphne, Grey states, "She [Mary Kay] set the bar very high."2
From CNN:
"She [Bergman] was heard in more than 400 commercials. Among them: a national campaign for Mrs. Butterworth's syrup, in which she provided the lead voice, and commercials for Kellogg's Froot Loops cereal, American Express, Honda and other sponsors."3From People magazine, December 06, 1999:
"Few fans knew Mary Kay Bergman by sight, but they loved the characters she brought to life from behind the scenes. Bergman, 38, performed voice-overs in such family fare as Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (she was Bimbette). But she was best known for her work in the edgy cult Comedy Central cable hit South Park, in which she spoke the parts of Ms. Crabtree and several others. 'She was just a dear,' says Libby Westby, the agent who found Bergman her first role 12 years ago. 'One of the nicest people, always positive, always a kind word.'"4
On November 11, 1999, Mary Kay died from a self-inflict gunshot. Afterwards, her husband set up the Mary Kay Bergman Memorial Fund to benefit the Suicide Prevention Center of the Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center.
"She was wonderful, there was nobody like her. There was something very special about her, with her big brown eyes and curly red hair -- she was one of a kind." - Rita Vennari, SBV Talent Agency
