Taylor paced back and forth in his Los Angeles home. He was waiting for Heather to arrive at his door. It had seemed like hours since they had gotten off the phone, even though she only left 10 minutes ago.
“DING-DONG!” the doorbell rang, loudly.
“She’s here!” Taylor thought, as the sound of his own doorbell made him jump in shock.
Taylor strode over to the doorway, carefully and reached for the doorknob. He shakily turned it, afraid of what reaction he would find on the other side.
Slowly, he opened the door to see her, “Hey, Heather…”
“Hey, Taylor,” she replied.
“Come on in,” Taylor opened the door, wider to let her inside his home.
Tay slammed the door shut, and led her to his room. He could barely believe that he was doing this. But, he knew what he had to do before he left to go home to Tulsa.
“Sit down,” Tay motioned toward his bed, sitting down himself.
Heather shook her head, “No, just tell me what this is about so, I can leave.”
“I can’t talk about something serious to a person who isn’t even going to take me seriously,” he explained with a tinge in his voice.
“Alright…,” she ploped down on the bed, next to him.
Taylor turned to look Heather in her eyes, “How’s your boyfriend?”
“Fine.”
“That’s good,” Tay smiled, “anyway, I really need to talk to you about us.”
“There is no ‘us’, Tay,” she reminded him.
“I know,” he agreed.
Heather was quite confused. What was Taylor talking about? Heather wasn’t exactly sure, nor was she sure she wanted to know. It seemed that since the day they broke up, Tay never had anything nice to say to her.
The middle member of Hanson tried, again, “Look, all I’m truthfully trying to say is…”
There was a long pause between Taylor Hanson and Heather as he scrambled to gather his words to say to her.
“What I’m trying to say is,” Tay was still looking Heather directly into her eyes, “that I want there to be an ‘us’…but as friends, ya know?”
“Let me get this straight,” the girl found it pretty hard to believe that after everything that the two of them went through, that he still wanted to be friends. “After everything that happened, you still want to be friends with me?”
“Yeah,” the keyboardist shrugged. “I leave in almost less than a month. I couldn’t leave here with you and I still hating each other. I could never forgive myself, and I’d feel horrible. What do you say? Can we call a truce?”
“I’m still trying to recover from the disbelief that you are actually saying this,” poor Heather told her ex-boyfriend, shocked.
“Believe me,” he smiled, “I thought I’d never say it, either.”
“I don’t know,” she turned from him. “I just don’t know if I could risk getting hurt, again.”
“That’s the beauty of all this,” explained Taylor, slmost sounding excited about all of this. “We’re not going out. You have a boyfriend here and I’ve got a girl back in Tulsa. Neither of us can actually get hurt unless we end up going back out.”
“True.”
“Look, Heather,” pleaded Taylor, “don’t make me beg. I don’t want to fight, anymore.”
Heather glanced at him, slyly, “Would you really beg?”
“Oh, no…” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Half an hour had gone by and Taylor and Heather were still discussing their ‘situation’. Technically, Tay didn’t beg her, but he came awfully close to it with all the weird excuses of why the both of them should be forgiven, and why they should be friends, again. It almost seemed pathetic.
“Heather, this is stupid, and you know it,” the blonde-haired boy just rolled his eyes at her.
“I know,” Heather giggled, she was acting more comfortable around him now, “but I like seeing you suffer.”
“Now, that’s just down right mean!” he laughed, playfully.
“Sorry, sorry…”
It looked like things were coming into the clear for Taylor. Maybe he wouldn’t have to leave L.A. with a guilty conscience, after all. Hopefully, that would be the outcome of this conversation.
“Well, where are we going from here, Heather?” questioned Taylor, determined to get an answer and a solution in his conversation.
“I don’t know,” she acted innocent, “what do you mean?”
“I mean,” he began to reiterate his words from before, “am I going to leave L.A. as your friend?”
There was a sudden silence that fell between them. The silence made the await for Heather’s response more antagonizing, and frankly, Taylor was pretty sure that was her plan.
Slowly, she smiled, saying, “I think I can deal with the two of us being friends, again, yeah.”
It had felt as if an immeasurable weight had been lifted off of Taylor’s shoulders. The feeling was incredible. If only the rest of his life could be this simple and feel this great.
“That’s great, Heather!” he told her, enthusiastically. “You don’t have any idea how much better I feel!”
“Trust me, I do,” she assured him. “Just ask my boyfriend…”
Remembering the incident with her boyfriend in the store, Tay shook his head, “Nah, I’ll pass on that one. I’ll just take your word for it.”
Heather laughed, now remembering what had happened in the store that evening, “By the way, I am so sorry about what happened that night! He has a bit of a temperament, and is way over-protective!”
“Now, you tell me…”
“Yeah,” Heather smiled, nervously, “sorry.”
“Don’t sweat it,” he reassured her. “I’m still alive, aren’t I?”
“I wasn’t so sure that day,” the girl joked. “You hit the aisle pretty hard.”
“I’m shocked that I wasn’t knocked unconscious,” that was sure a painful memory for Tay. “Alright, change of subject, do you wanna do something next week before I leave for good?”
Heather found that quite amusing, and tried to keep her laughter under control, but there was no hope, “Sure, why not?”
“I’ll call you, say…Wednesday to work things out fully?” he checked to see if that was okay with her.
“Sounds good.”
Thing were finally as they used to be “way-back-when” for Heather and Taylor. Taylor wouldn’t have to leave Los Angeles hating himself for not coming to a truce with a person he shared so much with. He felt a lot better now that the two of them were talking, again. There was peace for now, but that didn’t promise anything for the future. Could this renewed bond between Heather and Taylor stay glued?
