LONDON - FRIDAY JUNE 2, 2000
by Judy

We awoke at the appointed time (early), and had our breakfast at the Lily. The breakfasts that we had in London were scrambled eggs, ham (really gross ham), and toast. All the other breakfasts were "bread." That's right "bread." Maybe with butter and jelly if you were lucky. But food and lodging were way down our list of priorities - we were European travelers now - having mastered the underground, and toured for an entire afternoon.
How refreshing it was to find that we would be spending the morning on a tour bus, where a very British (older Mary Poppins type) lady graciously pointed the sights of London out to us. These sights we'd only read about (nursery rhymes included), were now real places. Unbelievable!!
After a fast stop at St. Paul's
we were let off near Buckingham Palace.
The monument is
dedicated to
Queen Victoria
We witnessed the changing of the guards (from afar - but we witnessed it).
Most Impressive!!!!!
We grew accustomed to hearing Suzy say
"Now - it's just a short 15 minute walk from here."
Suzy now marshaled her troops and we were off again
to the British Museum (no rest for us, you see). En Route, some of our group got waylaid and so Suzy pointed out the way and sent us (seasoned travelers that we were) on without her while she went back to look for the lost boys. We were frankly pretty tired by now, and I'm sure didn't actually do the British Museum justice. But we were there - I have pictures to prove it.
JD AND FRIENDS
(Martell is in the red hat)
Melissa
We met up with our group for dinner and then JD, Nancy, Melaine, Melissa, Michelle, and I were off to the "Jack the Ripper Tour." The tour assembled near the Tower of London
around this incredible sun dial.
And we were off on a great adventure, following our guide through the back streets and alleys of London. Our guide was entertaining and very talented and we were able to imagine what it must have been like to roam these streets with Jack.
We ended the tour at the Ten Bells Tavern
We were so tired at this point, that we took a quick look and ventured forth to find our way on the underground back to the Lily - and bed.
London - Saturday, June 3, 2000
Off again the next morning, we were given a semi-free day, and so our group bought day-trip tickets on the underground (much cheaper if you plan to make lots of trips in one day - and we did). Our first stop was at the Porto Bello market - a grand and giant garage sale/market type place.
And then we were off to Westminster - an incredible place -
We spent the afternoon visiting some of the places we wanted to spend more time at - JD climbed the steps to the top of St. Paul's and we girls just kind of wandered through the streets. We decided to make our way back to Leicester Square and enjoy the beautiful park and the street performers while we waited (and rested in the grass) to join up with the rest of our group for dinner.
OUR BEST MEAL OF THE WHOLE TRIP
AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD
Where we dined sumptuously on hamburgers - !!!!!
Then we made our weary way back to the Lily for our final night in London. How I'd love to hear again the noise of the street arguments and the traffic of London drifting through my dreams as I prepared, in sleep, for our next adventure.
There are many interesting London Web sites, but I found the following sites to be most interesting:
Event Guides
and
Londontown
