Intrepid Birds

Assailed by a mighty rattlesnake
A pair of mockingbirds at stake

High in the tree is a cosy nest
Where their offspring are taking rest
The enemy with his venomous zest
Is greedy to eat them like a cake

The poor birds suffer profound shock
Their foe turns up for the nastiest knock
Each one is facing like a rock
The challenge that has come in their wake

To fight with no dagger, no sword
No weapon though they can afford
Their parental love is above board
Each risk and hazard they would take

Undaunted they are no more weak
What a piece of bravery in the beak
Their restlessness is at its peak
As a horrible tempest in the lake

Such a gruesome view not in the least
For a humane eye is a feast
Enjoyable only by a beast
The thirst of savagery to slake

At the awesome sight I stand aghast
Like eagles daring and steadfast
They will be fighting till the last
For their young ones, not for their sake

On the spot there two more birds appear
They will not leave them forlorn there
Their gallant and sheer shrieks are to hear
Their unflinching pluck will not break

I hope their good luck will not shake
For them a V-sign you can make
