Phab is a national charity that aims to integrate people with and without
physical or sensory disabilities, within the community. Kent Phab, "People
Have ABilities", is the local part of the organisation that deals only
with Kent.
Kent Phab runs many projects which help promote inclusion of disabled
people within the community such as Togle, which links young people into
mainstream leisure, and KOB which makes young people aware of disability
issues and tries to breakdown prejudice, stereotyping and bullying.
Kent Phab is run by professionals, many of whom are volunteers. Our work and projects are funded entirely by donation. We aim to assist not just those who have a disability, but also society so that full inclusion can become a reality, and not just a dream. We are proud to work with young people and adults from all backgrounds; regardless of gender, race, religion or social standing.
Kent Phab is not about donating wheelchairs, hearing aids or materialistic
things, we provide something of much more valuable; opportunities for disabled
people to live normal lives. General attitudes often tell us that disabled
people cannot do things and cannot get the same opportunities as non-disabled
people.
These false ideas are believed by many people, including
some disabled people. Many often do not take part in activities they could
do, as many believe that they could not fit in, and fear they may
be treated badly by others. Many are unaware of their own abilities and
talents which leads to lack of self-confidence.
The biggest problem faced by disabled people is the social
exclusion this leads to.
Kent Phab strives to help change these attitudes by informing the public
about disability issues, and by providing opportunities for everyone to
mix equally.
