Listen up Austin! March 17, 2002 Alan Edwards
Hello everyone, and welcome to Radio's Rant. I hope to make this a weekly column, and with the draft happening tonight, I'll have plenty to rant about next week, I'm sure. Today, though, I'd like to talk about none other than Stone Cold Steve Austin.
I was, admittedly and proudly, a WCW mark right up until the buyout, and stayed aligned with my company throughout the Invasion angle. I preferred DDP, Konnan, Misterio, and Steiner over Crocky, Old Man Walking, NeedAKane, and even Austin. I nearly despised Vince's sports craptainment. I told myself that the day wrestling had completely transformed into this kayfabe-free show, I'd jump off a cliff, or at least turn the channel forevermore. Little did I know that the impossible would actually happen.
I couldn't stop watching, so I sat and cringed through the failed Invasion angle. I screamed at the TV when they made the entire WCW/ECW rosters heels. Never had I seen anything so ridiculous as two entire federations, regardless of previous gimmicks, all becoming heels at once. Yet I stood behind them, and watched as they were mercilessly whipped by Vince's Creation, the WWF. Eventually, though, I started to get used to the new style, and began to take an interest in certain wrestlers, one being Stone Cold Steve Austin.
One thing you could easily tell by watching the programming is that these guys had it together. It seemed that everyone worked together fine, the storylines made sense and had continuity, and you never seemed to see spots that looked as if they had been changed thirty seconds before the match started. It was as if the nWo poison had only reached as far as Hotlanta, and never made it to Stamford. These people were getting along and not practicing the politics us Dubya See Dubya fans had gotten used to seeing week in and out.
Well, the nWo showed up, and they've pissed some people off. I kinda like the angle, though I'm reluctant to get into it too much as they could go back to their old ways tomorrow, and the storyline would just end, flat out. However, we have a new Diva in the WWF, and his name is Steve Austin.
One of the locker room leaders, the Texas Rattlesnake is known for getting along with the boys and not using his main-event status to his advantage. So when it came to WrestleMania X8, the grandaddy of them all, and possibly the biggest Wrestlemania of them all, it didn't seem any different. Austin faced Hall, and it was a good match. Equal offense and defense, nothing too much resembling a squash. Then we find out that there was supposed to be interference from Vince, setting up the biggest storyline in all of pro wrestling at the moment, this whole draft thing. Stone Cold, though, wouldn't have it. He wouldn't allow the angle to play out because he didn't like it. At the last minute, plans were changed to suit this crybaby and make him happy, and the entire draft angle now makes no sense at all to the marks. Storyline wise, the whole thing was thrown off by this man. After getting his way, instead of showing his appreciation, the man no-shows both programs Post-Wrestlemania week, and may not show tonight, on one of the biggest Raws in recent history.
The Federation has taken down many, if not all, references to Austin off the website, and the site writers have been told not to add info about Austin until further notice. He has not shown for two big events already, and this may be his third. If he shows back up for SmackDown, he should be held off TV. He should be brought out for a humiliating segment where he gets squashed by Spike Dudley and injures his neck, and he should be kept off TV for a month in a recuperation angle. At the house shows, pit him against Perry Freakin' Saturn every night so he can get the shit kicked out of him. Better yet, make it a handicap with Saturn and Brock Lesnar beating the hell out of the Mealy Mouthed Bastard. Stone Cold doesn't deserve to walk back in to his main event status after this pathetic display of real-life Kurt Angle-like crying.
You're pathetic...What?!! You make me sick...What?!! I said you need to realize that you're not as important to wrestling as you think you are, and the younger talent is simply dying to take your place. Grow up, go back, take your punishment if the WWF has the balls to pass it on to you...then get out there in that ring and entertain like you have for years. Learn your part, and do your part. And don't question the angles...wrestling's popularity is fan-driven, and your popularity is fan-driven. So was Goldberg's, until (among other things such as the kick to Bret Hart) his Diva-esque attitude brought him down. Where is he at now? Sitting at home getting man boobs, collecting a fat paycheck but if he came back he'd never EVER have the pops that brought him those paychecks again. He got lazy, and he got political. And he got what he deserved...no respect from this fan. Austin, don't make the same damn mistake.
As always, I can be reached for comment at alanpugh43130@hotmail.com and I'll make every reasonable attempt to get back to ya! Take care, and stop back Monday for Listen to the Radio, the best damn Heat recap on Da Net!
