Ari Vedechi is a skilled thief and the leader - together with his brother - of the Red Gate gang, band of thieves and footpads who plague merchants and travellers in Karmorvus. Ari has disdained street crime as vulgar, dangerous, and more to thepoint, not very profitable. Instead, his preference is for entering the houses of the wealthy and making off with choice and easily sold items of value. Ari cannot resist the grand gesture or the lure of a really valuable item, which means that his thefts have been very high profile and have attracted the attention of the authorities, as well as those of envious rivals.
Before becoming a thief, Ari grew up in the small village of Foist, where he and his brother scraped a bare living helping bold adventurers probe the crumbling and dangerous ruins north of the village for treasure. He learned skills there which have stood him in good stead, and after a couple of years, he left Foist to make a much more comfortable (and safer) living in the big city.
In appearance, Ari is of average height and build and overall somewhat nondescript - an advantage in his trade. His brown hair is cut short, but often hidden under a wig, and he has large expressive dark eyes. Sometimes he has a beard and mustache, sometimes not. He tends to dress well, but not in a flashy fashion, which is appropriate to his apparent status - since Ari has another identity as a respected mercahnt and trader in antiquities. It lets him sell some of the objects that he "acquires" as well as case possible targets for new thefts. It also means that although the authorities are seeking the leader of the Red Gate gang, they have no idea who that figure actually is.
