Callistra is the daughter of a wandering healer, born on the road in the course of her mother's travels. She never knew who her father was. Bright and cheerful, she grew up travelling and while she learned a smattering of her mother's trade, she was also dreamy, preferring to avoid work wherever possible. Eventually she was apprenticed to Tamara, her mother's own teacher in an effort to make decent mage out of her, but Tamara's efforts to teach her discipline only bored Callistra. She started sneaking out and carousing with male students at night, gambling and drinking. Without an income she soon piled up a huge debt, and refusing to pay the way her creditors thought a woman should, tried to make money by petty theft. Eventually she came to the attention of the local professionals, who decided to to take her under their wing - a thief with a smattering of magic made a valuable apprentice. For a few years, Callistra stayed with Tamara, brushing up her magic skills and then practicing them nefariously by night. Eventually her lack of discipline and attention (worsened by sleepiness) drove Tamara to distraction and she was turned out. She made her living then as a thief, until one of her thieving mentors tried to get into her bed. She left town straight after that. Her nickname comes from the fact that she has pale grey eyes - which she thinks is a legacy of her long vanished barbarian father - and her preference for money over romance, which many young men think is cold-hearted.
