Carnater
A ferocious, heavy-built, animal used to guard properties, for
hunting and (more commonly in the Halsing lands) trained for war.
The Carnater is stockily built, with such heavily muscled jaws that
its protruding chin slopes directly into its short bowed legs. The
Carnater is not bred for speed, or intelligence, but for its suicidal
courage and ferocious bite. It will attack anything when angered,
and it has a truly prodigious bite - its jaws can open almost
90° and once locked in their target the Carnater will worry its
victim until one of them is dead. Like the Dyrewolf of the northern
forests, the Carnater is further insulated from threat by the thick
plates of fibrous armour that cover its head, shoulders and back.
This natural armour is sometimes reinforced by artificial means -
normally studded leather but occasionally steel. Their great
strength means that Carnaters carry such armour with ease. Because
of their short tempers, Carnaters are not considered good guard
animals for households - they tend to be truly safe only to those
they know very well - typically their handler - and have to be
trained while young. However, the baying of a pack of Carnaters - a
short harsh sound - makes even large predators think about hunting
elsewhere. Carnaters have short bristly fur, normally greyish,
cream, or light brown. The armouring plates are similarly coloured.
