Kurjat

The Kurjat is a creature about the size of a man that inhabits the coniferous forests of northern Gorgamelle. Slightly larger than a man, it is instantly recognisable by its peculiar gait, since it has hindquarters that are far larger and more muscled than its forequarters. These enable it to jump prodigiously and it can run at great speed on its hind legs, with its forelegs tucked up against its chest, although only for short distances. Normally it progresses more slowly, on all fours. It can also stand up on its hind legs, enabling it to browse the lower branches of trees It rarely has to flee predators, however, since it lives on the leaves of conifers and concentrates toxins in its fat, giving its meat a pungent smell. It can also spit a foul smelling and sticky "gob" very accurately if threatened. The Kurjat can even eat the leaves of the Swordtree, since it has a long snout, and its front teeth protrude out, almost forming a beak. Its long head is capped by a pair of droopy ears. The Kurjat is not poisonous, but its flesh is foul, and it is hunted almost exclusively by the Olmai for its coat, which is golden and either dappled (the lesser Kurjat) or striped (the greater, or mountain, Kurjat) with fawn or brown.
