Spiranther
The spiranther is a low, heavy browsing animal found in the
temperate forests, or occasionally in the lower regions of the
coniferous forests of Gorgamelle. It is mostly a browser, but is
omnivorous and will happily eat carrion. It is relatively slow, and
likes areas with plenty of undergrowth. Its head and forequarters
are covered with hard, bony plates and are massively muscled, with
two sacs either side of its jaw. These contain razor-sharp tusks,
which serve both to grub for food and as a weapon for defence. The
spiranther can shoot these tusks out of their protective sheath at
will, with tremendous force. If approached, they emit a warning
"whouff, whouff" noise. Anything that ignores the warning is likely
to find itself charged and risks a severe goring. Luckily, the
Spiranther cannot easily turn its head, and its vision is poor, so
any hunter who stays upwind and moves cautiously has a chance. This
is important, since its pinkish flesh is considered good eating, and
in Eochail lands it is considered a true test of hunting skill -
often killing one is part of a hunter's initiation. The Spiranther
has coarse reddish-brown hair and its plates are dark grey or
brown.
