SPITTING SPIDER

The spitting spider looks almost identical to the harmless puff spider, but the air sacs on its body serve a different purpose. When threatened, this spider will inflate its sacs and use the air to spray a strong toxin at its attacker. The poison can be absorbed through tiny cracks or cuts in the skin, and rapidly causes convulsions and possibly even death. If close enough, the spider will bite as well, ensuring puncture wounds for the toxin to enter. Spitting spiders hunt in small packs and will attack even quite large animals, subduing them with poison, and then webbing the body to form temporary nests. These spiders make communal nests like puff spiders, but they tend to migrate more often, since they have a bad effect on the local wildlife and so the nests are generally smaller. The toxin is retained in small vessels in their flesh, so they are poisonous to eat. Their only natural predators are Urbears which are immune to the effects of their toxin. These animals are sometimes driven into infested areas by hunters to clear out spider nests.
