This nocturnal predator is found in mountainous areas in the temperate parts of Gorgamelle. At first glance the Urbear does not live up to its hideous reputation. Although they can grow enormous - up to 4 metres tall, when standing on their hind legs - an Urbear in prime condition looks almost pudgy. It has a virtually hairless pelt and its skin appears to be stretched tight over its bulging stomach and limbs. The only clue to its true nature is its massively clawed forepaws and the huge teeth in its gaping maw. The Urbear's skin appears stretched because it has a thick layer of fat underneath. This acts as a food reserve and also as protection for the Urbear. Shallow wounds simply cause a trench in the fat that oozes clear yellow oil, and the Urbear is immune to most poisons unless it ingests them. It is easy to enrage an Urbear, but not at all easy to kill it. The skin on a starving Urbear hangs in loose folds and an animal in this condition is doubly dangerous, since it is always hungry. Urbears are actually omnivores and will eat carrion or fill up on the forest's plenty in spring, when they are at their least dangerous, but they live mostly on meat. What makes the Urbear particularly feared is its almost human cunning. Urbears will stalk lone hunters or travellers for miles and wait until they go to sleep. They are smart enough to follow a trap line and rip the snares apart to remove the animals caught within. Despite their bulk they can move silently and they have extraordinarily acute hearing and sense of smell, which enables them to detect poison bait. Urbears are known in the Eochail lands as "Hunter's Haunt". They are a dirty pinkish grey in colour.
