أن آراء الباحثين لم تتفق على تحديد هوية رابعة، فالبعض يرون أنها مولاة لآل عتيق،
وآل عتيق بطن من بطون قيس، والبعض الآخر يرون أن من آل عتيق بني عدوة ولذا تسمى
العدوية. وأما كنيتها فأم الخير..وقيل إن اسم رابعة يعود إلى أنها ولدت بعد ثلاث
بنات لأبيها، عاشت في البصرة خلال القرن الثاني الهجري، وقد عمرت حوالي ثمانين

المؤرخ الصوفي فريد الدين العطار في (تذكرة الأولياء) بأن رابعة: ولدت في بيت فقير
جداً، وتوفي أبوها وهي في مرحلة الطفولة، ولحقت به أمها فذاقت رابعة مرارة اليتم

بلا بيت، وبلا مال، وبلا زواج ، غير أنه يبدو أن رابعة كانت مولاة، وكانت تعزف الناي
ثم كانت مغنية، (هذا ما قاله العطار)، وأنها كانت على قدر من الجمال والحسن، وقد
نقل اليافعي نص بعض الصالحين" خطر لي أن أزور رابعة العدوية -رضي الله تعالى
عنها - وأنظر أصادقة هي في دعواها أم كاذبة، فبينما أنا كذلك، وإذا بفقراء قد
أقبلوا ووجوههم كالأقمار ورائحتهم كالمسك، فسلموا علي وسلمت عليهم. وقلت: من أين
أقبلتم؟ فقالوا: يا سيدي حديثنا عجيب</span><span dir=LTR></span><span dir=LTR

أبناء التجار الممولين. فكنا عند رابعة العدوية - رضي الله عنها - في مصر (ولعلها
البصرة) فقلت: وما سبب ذهابكم إليها فقالوا: كنا ملتهين بالأكل والشرب في بلدنا.
فنقل لنا حسن رابعة العدوية وحسن صوتها. وقلنا لابد أن نذهب إليها ونسمع غناءها
وننظر إلى حسنها، فخرجنا من بلدنا إلى أن وصلنا إلى بلدها؛ فوصفوا لنا بيتها،
وذكروا لنا أنها قد تابت. فقال أحدنا: إن كان قد فاتنا حسن صوتها وغنائها، فما
يفوتنا منظرها وحسنها. فغيرنا حليتنا، ولبسنا الفقراء، وأتينا إلى بابها. فطرقنا
الباب فلم نشعر إلا وقد خرجت، وتمرغت بين أقدامنا وقالت: لقد سعدت بزيارتكم لي
فقلنا لها: وكيف ذلك. فقالت: عندنا امرأة عمياء منذ أربعين سنة، فلما طرقتم الباب
قالت: إلهي وسيدي بحرمة هؤلاء الأقوام الذين طرقوا الباب إلا ما رددت علي بصري.
فرد الله بصرها في الوقت. قال: فعند لك نظر بعضنا إلى بعض وقلنا ترون إلى لطف الله
بنا، لم يفضح سريرتنا فقال الذي أشار علينا بلبس الفقراء: والله لا عدت أقلع هذا
اللباس من علي. وأنا تائب إلى الله - عز وجل - على يدي رابعة فقلنا له. ونحن
وافقناك على المعصية، ونحن نوافقك على الطاعة والتوبة فتبنا كلنا على يديها.
وخرجنا عن أموالنا جميعها، وصرنا فقراء- كما ترى". </span></span><span

العدوية، إذ كتب عنها في حادثة السوق (أنها في أحد الأيام، كانت رابعه تقضي حاجة
لسيدها، رآها رجل غريب وظل ينظر إليها بنظرات شريرة، فخافت منه وهربت. إلا إنها
تعثرت وهي تركض، فغميّ عليها، فلما استيقظت أخذت تناجي ربها( إلهي، أنا غريبة

المألوف والمعروف، يحكى أن إبراهيم بن أدهم ذهب إلى الحج ماشياً على قدميه، وكان
يتوقف كل خطوة ليصلي ركعتين فبلغ الكعبة بعد أربعين عاماً.. وكان يقول: (غيري يسلك
هذا الطريق على قدميه، أما أنا فأسلكه على رأسي)، ولما بلغها لم يجدها فبكى وقال:(
وا أسفاه! أأظلم بصري حتى لم أعد أرى الكعبة؟). فسمع صوتاً يقول: ( يا إبراهيم!
لست أعمى، لكن الكعبة ذهبت للقاء رابعة). فتأثر إبراهيم، ثم رأى الكعبة وقد عادت
إلى مكانها..ثم شاهد رابعه تتقدم فقال لها: أي رابعه! يا لجلال أعمالك! ثم ما تلك
الضجة التي تحدثينها في الدنيا؟ فالكل يقولون: ذهبت الكعبة للقاء رابعة!).
فأجابته: ( يا إبراهيم! وما تلك الضجة التي تثيرها أنت في الدنيا بقضائك أربعين
عاما حتى تبلغ هذا المكان؟؟ فالكل يقولون إبراهيم يتوقف في كل خطوة ليصلي ركعتين.
فقال إبراهيم: ( نعم مضيت أربعين ربيعاً اجتاز هذه الصحراء)، فقالت رابعة: ( يا
إبراهيم لقد جئت أنت بالصلاة، أما أنا فقد جئت بالفقر). ثم بكت طويلاً.</span><span

على رابعة يعودونها من مرضٍ ألم بها، فسألوها: ما حالك؟ قالت:والله ما عرفت لعلتي
سبباً، عرضت عليّ الجنة فملت بقلبي لها، فأحسست أن مولاي غار عليّ فعاتبني، فله
العتبى)..وهنا تعني أن الله عاتبها لهذا الميل؛ لأنه مولاها وحبيبها، فتابت وقررت
