Here’s a little music video fic for you guys. Well, not really a video fic. More like
a song tossed into a fic. Anyway, I used the song ‘Breathe’ by Faith Hill.
Rating: 14A Disclaimer: I do not own Jessie, James or Meowth. Sadly. And I also have no claims
on the song ‘Breathe.’
One Magical Night By Silver V Dedicated to Amber and Kyley; friends from childhood. I can feel the magic floating in the air A breath of air kissed the heavy night air, thick with the sounds of evening.
Frogs croaking in three-part harmony while owls lent their soft hoots along with the
chirping crickets and underneath it all there was the faint rustling sound of grass
rippling with the wind. Yes, the night was magical, peaceful, and ripe with the
sounds of nature. “JAMES!! What…have…you…done?” “I didn’t mean to Jessie! I swear! I thought if I just maybe sprayed a bit on the
food, it would cook a bit faster.” “Ya Jessie, it says right here dat the hairspray is ‘flammable.’” “That means it could cause a fire! And oh look, IT DID!” *whack* “Ow!” That magical and peaceful night stillness was rudely broken with the sounds of a
brawl emanating from a small, wood hut. Being with you gets me that way The inhabitants of the flaming cabin shoved their few possessions out of a
smoldering doorframe, the door having burnt off while they fought, and stumbled
into the not-so-peaceful night. Still bickering, they scrambled up a nearby hill and
eventually their argument trailed off into silence as they stood watching the blaze.
James sat down heavily onto his sleeping bag, feeling miserable and disheartened.
He switched his gaze from the cabin to Jessie’s sooty and extremely angry
expression, watching the flames dance across her fine boned features, and just
wishing. I watch the sunlight dance across your face ‘She’s so pretty’, he thought absently, studying her face. Abruptly Jessie turned
and scooped up her pack, nudging James with her toe as she did so. “Come on. We gotta find someplace to sleep,” she stated abruptly, stalking off. “She’s still mad at ya,” Meowth commented, starting off after Jessie. He sighed heavily, shouldering his pack. “I know. She’ll calm down pretty soon
though. She always does.” Him and Meowth followed the sound of Jessie’s footsteps for a while before James
thought it prudent to finally ask, “Jessie! Where are we going?” “Someplace where we can sleep!” she snapped. “Can’t we just sleep on th’ ground? We have before,” Meowth inserted. “No! I want to sleep on a bed, and until I find a bed we’re not stop—AHHHHHHH” her
declaration was cut off by a startled scream. A resounding splash followed. “Jessie? What happened?” James called out, worried. He could barely see two feet
in front of him, it was so dark. He stood perfectly still but his straining ear could
only catch the sounds of gurgling and someone splashing about and the sounds of running
water....it dawned on him in a light bulb moment. “Jessie’s fallen into a river or something!” he exclaimed to Meowth, but Meowth
had already figured that out and was starting cautiously forward, not wishing to fall
into the water himself. James had no such reservations. He dropped his pack and
dashed forward, calling out Jessie’s name. A kind of sputtering gasp answered him,
and he finally located her sleek red head bobbing pitifully above the dark rushing
water. Without a second thought James dove in after her. He never had second
thoughts when it came to Jessie. And I’ve never been this swept away “Come on James! Grab hold!” Amidst his worry, Meowth had had the presence of
mind to get a length of coiled rope from a knapsack and he tossed it out to James
who was desperately trying to keep Jessie’s head above water while not sinking
them both. He reached out blindly and grasped the slippery rope. “Pull us out fast, use quick attack.” At James’s gasping order, Meowth whipped
around, the rope held in both paws over a shoulder and streaked forward, sending
Team Rocket flying out of the water. James carefully laid out the unconscious Jessie, and sat back on his heels,
swiping at the lavender hair that kept falling in his eyes. He looked her over cautiously,
feeling his way down her slim legs and arms. “No broken bones,” he muttered to Meowth who was hovering around them
fretfully. “Lot’s of bruises and cuts though.” Meowth could see that and to both of
their worried eyes her pale face was mottled with spreading bruises, and there was a
nasty gash over her left eyebrow. Meowth frowned; she was awfully still.... “James, check if she’s breathing,” Meowth suddenly snapped out. James’s eyes
widened with understanding and he bent over with his ear to her mouth. “I can’t feel anything,” he whispered hoarsely, the worry leaving a lump in his
throat that wouldn’t be swallowed down. “Ok, well then....I think we should turn ‘er on her side or somethin’. She has ta
cough up some water before she can breathe. That’s what always happens in the
movies.” And sure enough, as soon as James switched her onto her side and gave her
a good whump on the back, she started to cough up the water. She drew in a ragged
breath and let it out in a whoosh before breathing regulated. James and Meowth’s
own breaths came much easier. “Well. Better strip ‘er or she’ll freeze,” Meowth commanded briskly after a brief
pause in which they each collected themselves as best they could. “Strip her? As in naked?” James yelped. “I can’t do that! She’d kill me.” Meowth ignored the man’s protests and threw some extra clothing at his head.
“Not if she doesn’t know. Hurry up now, and after your done that zip ‘er into a
sleeping bag. I’ll make a fire.” Meowth started to turn away, then halted and looked
over at the wet and bedraggled James. “Strip yourself too, and join up the sleeping
bags. Shared body heat does wonders.” And will do wonders to progress their stilted
relationship along, Meowth thought slyly. It was past time in his estimation that the
two Rocketeers admitted what the cat both knew they felt. Oh, Jessie could hide it
pretty darned well but there were times that Meowth had caught her gazing
adoringly at James while he was busy at getting them into trouble, or screwing up
their plans. “But...but...” James could feel his face heating up, “Meowth! We’d both be
well...you know!” “That’s why ya wear the extra clothes I threw at you,” Meowth said patiently, as
though explaining to a small child. “Oh. Erm...right.” James proceeded very cautiously to do what Meowth had
suggested, blushing furiously while he did so and trying his very darndest not to
look too closely at the long white limbs being exposed. He had a bad moment there
when he saw a large yellowish bruise on the side of her ribs. Delayed reaction
seemed to kick in, and he could feel tears starting to mist over his green eyes. He
hastily wiped his eyes dry with a dirty hand, and continued with the task at hand,
trying even harder to not focus on her exposed skin. It was only when he came to her
frivolous, scanty red underwear which—even when not soaking wet—didn’t cover
all that they should that he couldn’t take it anymore. He hastily spun away and
scrubbed his hands over his face and into his hair. Hard. He took a couple of deep
breaths...in...out...in...Meowth glanced over and hid a grin seeing James’s
reaction. He had figured it would be something like this. James shot a look his way
and narrowed his eyes as if reading the cagey little cat’s mind but Meowth just
stared all wide-eyed and innocent back before busying himself with the fire. James
determinedly, if a bit shakily, returned to his nerve-wracking job of undressing
Jessie and struggling her into an extra uniform. Having accomplished that, James called on Meowth and between the two of them
they managed to wrestle Jessie none too gently into her sleeping bag. After
mastering the puzzle of how to zip the two bags together, James crawled in beside
Jessie, made himself comfortable, and lay there stiff as a board. Every once in a
while he snuck furtive glances at the redheaded girl curled up beside him, and pretty
soon Meowth snorted exasperatedly. “It’s defeatin’ the purpose of having the bags zipped together if your gonna stay
as far away from her as ya can. Come on James, put your arms around her.” Again
using that condescending tone the matchmaking cat stayed by the joined sleeping
bags until James rigidly pulled Jessie into his arms. “Alright, goodnight now James.” “ ’Night.” Meowth laid out his own sleeping bag on the other side of the fire and settled
down for a comfortable sleep, secure in the thought that Jessie was ok and maybe,
just maybe, something would happen between his two best friends.
Mmm. Warmth. Security. Shelter. Snug. Those thoughts raced around like
currents in Jessie’s mind, and she snuggled back against the cozy solidness
behind her. She felt something stir, grumble quietly and a hand sleepily brushed at
her tangled hair. Slowly Jessie’s mind registered all that was happening and finally it
made an impression. Body behind hers? Hand brushing her hair? Exactly who’s
body and hand was it? Jessie was all tensed, ready to spring up and fight for her virtue when the
memories came flooding back. * She was dying. She could feel it--her muscles going lax, her body’s strength
slowly giving way to the powerful pulling of the water. She couldn’t see; it was all
black, roiling, surging waves and her face was shockingly numb, no longer could
she feel the rocks and debris abrading the sensitive flesh. Her last thought before blacking out was: James. * All my thoughts just seem to settle on the breeze Remembering all that left Jessie with a slightly hollow feeling. It wasn’t the fact
that she had almost died—of course, that was a scary thought also—but it was more
than that. She knew James couldn’t swim very well, hardly at all actually, and yet he
being a mere cat and all. She felt an inexplicably surge of tenderness—so strong it
almost hurt—towards the lavender-haired man who had cared enough to rescue her
at his own peril. So with that in mind she turned clumsily over, hissing between her teeth when she
accidentally landed on a bruise. She glanced down at her throbbing arm before
raising her gaze to whoever was holding her. She had a pretty good idea but it still
gave her a shock when she encountered James’s mouth two inches away from her
startled eyes. She forced herself to look beyond his beautifully sculpted lips, the
lower one easing into a fuller curve in his sleep. Going past the cheerfully snub nose
that so suited his personality, she glanced at his girly lashes that lay thick and soft
against his cheeks before once again focusing on his mouth. Did he have to have
such a damn kissable mouth?
Gulping, Jessie swiftly veered away from dangerous thoughts such as that and
instead turned her mind to how cute he looked in sleep. A nice safe topic, James
looking cute. She often thought that was the right word for him—cute. Although
there were times that he looked downright hot, like that one time she had surprised
him after he had just showered and he was standing staring at her with only the
tiniest towel imaginable hiding all those things that Jessie shouldn’t even have been
thinking of. Hair wet and snarled, and his broad chest still wet...glistening...Jessie
was snapped back to reality when James stirred in his sleep rolling onto his stomach
and flinging an arm around her middle. She winced when it connected with a few
bruises but left it there, loving the warm weight of it. He sighed briefly, and
murmured something—she thought it sounded suspiciously like her name but
couldn’t be sure—and snuggled down until his head rested on her shoulder, his face
nestled in the crook where neck met shoulder. Jessie froze, feeling his warm breath
on her neck and the slippery softness of his hair against her cheek. She bit her bottom lip, feeling a vise tighten around her heart at the sweetness of
James’s unconscious gesture. If he had been awake, she knew she would have felt
duty-bound to whack him and yell something along the lines of ‘James you pervert!’
It was what everyone expected of her, she wouldn’t want to disappoint them or
anything. She knew people thought her just a bit hot-headed and mayhap a tad
callous, but she did have her feelings...oh, she had her feelings. She just wasn’t all
that sure how to express the more tender ones sometimes, but now that no one else
was around...Jessie let out a quiet breath and leaned down, slipping a hand into the
silky light hair at the nape of his neck, and curling up against him, her knees cradled
against his flat belly. Moments later she drifted off into sleep, comfortable only
because she knew no one could see her nuzzling with James. When I’m lying wrapped up in your arms James dared not even breathe, he was so apprehensive. His mouth pressed against
her soft neck, he kept himself perfectly still. Only when he felt Jessie’s little sigh
and when she curved her hand into his hair did he relax and remember to open his
mouth and take in air. He smiled slightly, feeling a sense of euphoria rush through
him. He, the one who whenever tried to act nonchalant came out looking ridiculous,
had managed to fool Jessie into thinking he was still asleep. Through her actions he had also
finally managed to get some semblance of admittance from Jessie about her feelings for him. The slight smile grew until it became a grin, and he
decided—with the not-so-great logic of James combined with the heady knowledge
of Jessie cradling him—decided that he would explore this newfound deception a bit more. The whole world just fades away He squinched down inch by slow and careful inch, his head deserting her shoulder
to come to rest above her left breast. He felt the soft curve against his cheek and
swallowed audibly, had anyone been around to hear it. He cast a stealthy glance
upward, ‘whew, she’s still asleep’... The only thing I hear ...and listened intently but all he could hear was her steady breathing and the
rhythmic thump, thump, thump of her heart beneath his ear. Is the beating of your heart
Well, I had planned on making this a lot longer, basically using the whole song.
However, as it turns out, if I had tried to use the whole song it would have gotten
long and dragged out and this just seemed a good place to end it. I don’t know if this
was any good, it was more just a practice attempt at making a one-shot fic, but my
sis seems to like it. It also started out as a humorous fic, but kind of dwindled into a
serious, thoughtful one. And now that I read it over it really seems to have no point.
Maybe I’ll make a sequel. Who knows. Anyway, hope you enjoyed it and send any
comments to my email__silver_fairy@angelfire.com__I’d appreciate it. Silver V
