Independent postal administration
era start on January 1st, 1967 when the Abu Dhabi took over the postal
service. On April 1st, 1967 the Independent Postal Administration issued
its first set pictures His Highness Shikh Zaid bin Sultan al Nahayan
the current president of the United Arab Emirates.Eleven Abu Dhabi sets
were issued during the Independent postal administration and these includes
55 Abu Dhabi different stamps. Ten aerogrammes are used during the Independent
postal administration, this not include the different varieties.
On November 1st, 1967, the first
post office was opened in Al Ain in Buraimi area (Now in Oman). Four kinds
of cancels were used in Al Ain post office, the small circle cancel (Type
11), Al Ain oval registered cancel (Type
12), Al Ain Parcel cancel (Type 13)
and Al Ain circle cancel (Type 14).
New types of cancels were introduced
during the independent postal administration on April 1st, 1968 and some
other types introduced during the period 1969 to 1971. The most important
and unusual cancel, which used during the Independent era, was the Palace
cancel (Type 7).
The cancel, which portrays the old Abu Dhabi palace, was placed on April
1st, 1968. The cancel was only in use for a few months before it was damaged
while being used as a hammer.
