Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi)-May5 May fifth is also called Tango no Sekku ( Boy's day ) or Shobu no Sekku ( Iris Festival ) This day became a national holiday, and was renamed Children's Day in 1948.
The Boys' Festival was for expressing the hope that each boy in the family will grow up healthy and strong, but now it has become a day to celebrate children in general. Warrior’s figures are set up in the house during this festival, iris leaves are placed under the eaves to fend off evil, and huge fish-like streamers are fastened to poles.Carp has the strength to even swim up waterfalls and have long been taken as symbols of success in life. The day also features the practice from long ago of taking a bath with flag (a plant), reputed to have medicinal effect. Flag was believed to protect from plagues and as the Japanese pronounciation shohbu for the flag is the same with a phrase meaning "admire heroes".
