Big Dosage of the '70s From Collective Soul Funny to think Collective Soul was once viewed as a grunge-lite group (albeit for people who like their alternative-rock to sound just like Bachman-Turner Overdrive). In reality, however, the Atlanta quintet always have been staunch traditionalists who like their melody and classic-rock riffery -- and they allow these natural impulses to shape their fourth and finest disc. Tremble For My Beloved and Heavy open the album with a double shot of '70s guitar-rock bombast sweetened with prog-rock keyboards seemingly lifted from the first Foreigner album. Strings, acoustic guitars and more spacey synthesizer effects are brought out for the pensive ballads, while the despairing lyrics and smattering of drum loops are the only clues this record was released in 1999, not 1979. Dosage may be unabashedly old-fashioned, like Nirvana never happened, yet it's undeniably catchy. |
