Comcast Online (Dosage Review) This is one Dosage that doesn't need a spoonful of sugar to make the tunes slide down more easily. Collective Soul adds on to their already long list of hits such as "World I Know," "December," "Shine" and "Precious Declaration" with their fourth full-length album. Fans of Collective Soul will be pleased with this melodic treatment. The band does not break any new ground here yet stays with its same tried-and-true formula: soft rock riffs mixed with soothing vocals. Some may criticize the band for not charging forward with a new sound but for the most part I like it when a group sticks to what works. The first single, "Run" has already been featured on the Varsity Blues soundtrack, you know the teen venue starring Dawson's Creek James Van Der Beek. Paired with a classic tempo, "Run" showcases singer/guitarist Ed Roland's full pop potential. The track "Generate," starts with a slightly techno-sounding introduction, and instantly captures the listener's attention. Simple lyrics highlight "Heavy," another lead track. Roland sings on the refrain "All your weight, it falls on me/ It brings me down." The weight referred to is a figurative rather than literal. A catchy, familiar little ditty runs through the melody of "No More No Less." I can't quite place it but I like the diversification that it adds to the song. The overall feeling connotes a Roland singing with a slight smile on his face. The liner notes promise a bonus track that can only be unlocked via a CD-ROM and web connection. However, if you continue to let the album play, a 12th track does come up on the CD. I was unable to launch the "exclusive" bonus track since I was trying to do it before the album's actual release date (Feb. 9, 1999). But you'd think it would be active one day early! At this point, your guess is as good as mine. With Dosage Collective Soul proves that they still have what it takes to create the musical hits. The band should expect to garner several modern rock chart toppers from this release. |
