Cross Bearing
Bible reading: Luke 14:27
A man was seen walking along the road dragging a wooden cross. He was
walking across the state of Wisconsin, trying to raise money for some
religious cause. He was bent over as if carrying a heavy burden. Cars
slowed down and people wondered what it was all about. Someone noticed
that he had small wheels fastened to the bottom of the cross and that
he was not carrying the cross at all. He was just pulling it along the
road on small wheels. What appeared to symbolize hardship and self-denial
was pulled along on a set of hidden wheels.
How are we carrying our cross? Jesus said if we do not take up our cross
and follow Him, we cannot be His disciple. Are we also putting wheels
under our cross by still having some self in our hearts? Jesus also said
if we do not forsake all that we cannot be His disciples.
Our cross may seem heavy at times, but if we have Jesus to help us carry
it, it becomes lighter. To the world, cross bearing is foolishness. It
even becomes a burden to some professing Christians. People want to have
their own way. They want to be exalted and they seek praise. This is not
what Jesus meant when He said we must take up our cross and follow Him.
It is not something that is optional.
Bearing our cross is not something that can be done just once in our
lifetime. Luke says it must be done daily. This is still what it means
to follow Jesus. If we look for shortcuts or if we put wheels under our
cross, we will be disappointed when we come before the judgment seat
