Methodology: A "league baseline" was created to begin the season by use of the previous year's Spring League standings. Each League was assigned a group of points (from 25 to 5 based on league strength) and participants were given point multipliers based upon their status within the league at the end of their season. These multipliers were assigned as follows: 1st place = 5 x (league strength multiplier); 2nd place = 4 x ; 3rd place = 3 x ; 4th place = 2 x ; and all others 1 x . For teams not playing in a league or not in existence the previous season a point total was assigned based upon a comparative analysis of that team to other teams around the state, with such analysis based strictly upon the team's "showing" at post-season tournaments in the Spring 2000 season. Teams forced to "play up" in their respective leagues were given additional points for playing in a stronger age group despite a lower league ranking.

The "league baseline" points were added upon by each team's showing in various Spring 2000 post-season tournaments. Each tournament was assigned a degree of difficulty based upon the strength of the field. A team's placement in each post-season tournament led to a multiplier in the same manner as the league placement discussed above. In the event that a team competed in no post-season tournaments then a point total was assigned based upon a comparative analysis of that team to others around the state. Factors such as head-to-head results and common opponents were used in the awarding of these point totals. Those teams that competed in events outside of their age groups were also assigned a number of points based upon their finish in such events as well as the events' relative degree of difficulty.

While this initial ranking is Pre-league it is NOT pre-season. Results of tournaments played to date this season (Spring 2001) were factored in, mainly concerning head-to-head competition. During the regular season teams will receive points for both tournament play as well as league play. However, many teams do not participate in tournaments prior to April and many league schedules/results are not available for some time. For this reason point totals for these events will not be added until the May rankings. Interim rankings will be adjusted based upon head-to-head competition and analysis of common opponents.

Season Rankings - each team will receive points for tournament showings as well as league games played. As above such points will be based upon the league or tournament strength and a multiplier used (in the case of tournament play) based upon the team's showing. While playing in multiple tournaments would lead to an accumulation of points, teams will encounter a barrier of diminishing returns for playing in tournaments below their talent level ("trophy hunting"). Teams will receive points for league games as well as league standings at the conclusion of the season. Although some teams are "tournament only" such a result is necessary to balance out point totals of the teams who play in fewer tournaments with others. Out of state tournaments WILL be considered towards point totals based upon the strength of the tournament relative to the field. This strength will be judged upon the USSSA point totals for the teams in the field, or the AAU, CABA, or other rankings/showings for each team in major events. In no event will such tournaments receive a higher point total than the highest point total achieved for comparable in-state tournaments played on the same dates. This result is necessary to account for in-state teams unable to travel with the frequency of others.

Season Rankings - Game calculations - aside from points given for tourney play, only games between teams ranked for the week will count for points (in BOTH league and tourney play). If the higher ranked team wins, no change in points is made for either team except for the tourney points which are added prior to the head-to-head matchup calculation. If the lower ranked team wins, points are added to the victor and subtracted from the loser. To attain the point change the following formula is used: .01(higher team's rank - lower team's rank)(higher ranked teams point total for the NEW week). While this may lead to a dramatic change at times for some teams, it is also an incentive for lower ranked teams to participate in quality tournaments and creates a sort of "feedback loop" to eventually solidify where each team should actually be ranked.

Tie Breakers - in the event of a tie teams will be judged upon (in order): head-to-head from both the 2000 and 2001 seasons (if known), previous year's showing at major events, strength of the league played in. If there is still a tie after these considerations then a tie will be stated in the rankings.

Point Totals - point totals determining rankings will be posted beginning with the rankings in the 2nd week of May 2001. These totals will include the pre-league totals used. Those wishing to review the point totals prior to such time may e-mail the webmaster.
