(Providence, RI) -- A new addition to the Westin Hotel is getting closer to becoming a reality. The "Providence Journal" reports a Providence design review committee yesterday approved the plans for the 31-story tower proposed by the hotel's new owner. The Cranston-based Procaccianti Group bought the hotel from the state for 95-point-five-million-dollars in April. As part of the deal, Procaccianti agreed to complete an expansion of the downtown hotel by July 2007. The proposal will undergo a public hearing tomorrow before the full Capital Center Commission.

--June 15th 2005--

The shop Stewards met with HR again this week and are working with HR on several issues regaurding payroll and the seven minute rule ...etc all is going well. We will keep you posted. Check back for more info on this next week.

--June 17th 2005--

In our check this week we received notice of an increase in our parking fees. We all felt that this increase was Excessive, Unfair, and Unaffordable. We have met with the Convention Center Authorities Jim Mcarvil, he has given us his word that the increase has been scrapped and a new plan is underway. We are to hear back next week on the details of the new plan for our parking fees, they will be coming back down to an affordable rate, that we know. We will know next week, before next Thursday. We will keep you posted. Check back Wednesday.

--June 7th 2005--

Some of the shop stewards have been meeting with HR over the past couple of days to settle some issues with payroll / timeclocks / Seven minute rule. HR is very helpful and everything is moving along. All of our issues are on the way to being resolved. A follow up meeting is scheduled for Monday at 10AM in HR offices. I will post the outcome of that meeting Monday evening.

---May 1st 2005---
The overtime issue that was mentioned on 4/28 (below) has been resolved, let a shop steward know if you still have any concerns

----April 28 2005-----
NOTICE:

All Westin Union Stewards -
Overtime hours for this week are under some confusion. Starwood paid us for a couple of days for this week and Procaccianti group will be paying the remainder. As of now, Procaccianti has agreed to pay the OT hours. Please, all Shop Stewards, talk to the people in your department. Find out if they are doing OT this week and get that info to HR for payroll on Monday. Make sure people pay attention to the check when they get it. If they have not received the correct amount of OT, they need to go to HR and ask for it.
Also we have some confusion on the meetings we had to go to on the 25th or 26th, to fill out applications. Some people punched out when they attended, some came in on a day off to attend. Those people need to be compensated for that time. Procaccianti Group has agreed to pay, since Starwood has declined and passed the buck. So, Shop Stewards, please talk to the people in your department and make a list of people who attended the meeting, but did not punch in for it. Bring that list to HR as well so the people can get paid for attending the meeting. Shop Stewards if you could also pass this message on to any other Shop Stewards you may see. Thanks so much. -Web Master

Now, The Procaccianti Group has until Monday to pay the authority $4 million worth of "earnest money," in order to keep the deal going forward. Recent Victories
From: Alisa Gallo

Folks - In case you haven't heard, we've won two important cases recently:

1) Maria Machado - A room attendant for 9 years, the hotel tried to fire her based on one error. Room attendants united to prevent the termination and bring Maria back to work. Congratulations to Carmen Castillo in particular for a job well done in Maria's defense!

2) Edgar Lorenzo - The Chef violated Edgar's seniority rights on scheduling overtime. The hotel has agreed to pay Edgar for his lost time to settle the grievance. Congratulations to Mirjaam, Edwin and Marvin, who worked on this case.
