Leo Burnett USA Launches Musical Artist in Residence Program with Hit-Makers Collective Soul. Innovative Initiative Explores New Model for Music in Advertising.

Leo Burnett USA Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Cheryl Berman today announced the launch of an innovative Musical Artist in Residence Program. On a quarterly basis, Leo Burnett USA will host guest musicians, songwriters and producers at the agency to explore various musical opportunities in advertising. The first program will feature multi-platinum recording artists Collective Soul and is being hosted in partnership with North Star Media, an independent and broad-based music publishing company.

“More and more, the advertising and music industries are colliding with huge benefits for both sides,” said Berman. “We want to lead the way in developing relationships that help us bring the right musical opportunities to our clients while helping musicians get their music heard via advertising—without all the red tape. Ultimately, we think the solution lies in bringing musicians and agencies closer together. We need each other.”

After being in the major label system for a decade, Collective Soul has recently and successfully released its latest album “Youth” through its own label El Music Group, therefore exclusively owning the rights to its music. The band is currently exploring opportunities in advertising, including writing, recording and licensing music and possibly appearing in commercials.

The ultimate goal of the Musical Artist in Residence Program is to build a face-to-face, working relationship between guest artists like Collective Soul and the agency to streamline aspects of exploring musical solutions and opportunities for marketers. The program will also serve to further educate artists about the advertising industry. As part of each program, guest artists will work with Leo Burnett creatives to discuss the possibility of creating or licensing music for current and future marketing and advertising projects, with the ultimate goal of marrying the right music with the right client initiative.

“We are very excited about Leo Burnett’s program and the endless possibilities it can bring,” said Ed Roland, founder and lead singer of Collective Soul. “One of the reasons we created El Music Group was to be able to explore, implement and streamline new and creative opportunities with our music. This groundbreaking program allows us to deal directly with the agency and their clients’ needs by eliminating the bureaucracy that takes place in the old system.”

“As the music business is radically changing we are thrilled to be at the forefront of creating new ideas and strategies to brand our music in additional outlets,” continued Roland.

“Leo Burnett is taking a bold step forward in promoting the interests of artists and advertisers in an increasingly diverse global media market. A world leader in advertising has fashioned a next-generation means of taking the creative music process one step closer to the audience,” said Ron Sobel, president of North Star Media.

03/22/05: Collective Soul annouces their coast to coast Canadian Tour Sponsered By Radio Shack. This article was posted on the Official Collective Soul Site today:

Warner Music Canada/El Music Group recording artist Collective Soul is set to hit the road this spring on a Canadian headlining tour, in support of their latest album, Youth. The tour is sponsored by RadioShack and will encompass 16 shows beginning May 3rd in Halifax, Nova Scotia and ending May 24th in Vancouver, British Columbia. As the sponsors, RadioShack will be supporting the tour with a massive media campaign and a specifically created Collective Mix package.

Collective Soul’s lead singer, Ed Roland, sent the following message to Canadian fans: "Hello to all our friends in Canada. We are so excited about our upcoming Canadian Tour in conjunction with RadioShack. Finally, we get to tour from Coast to Coast. This is something we have been looking forward to for many years, especially with our new release Youth, being able to play the history of Collective Soul from Hints to Youth. We sincerely appreciate the enthusiasm our friends in Canada have given us all these years, and are looking forward to seeing and hearing from all of you real soon."

Collective Soul’s new album, Youth, was released on November 16th, 2004 and is the Georgia rocker’s first studio album since 2000’s critically acclaimed Blender. The lead single, “Counting The Days” marked a triumphant return to Canadian radio and spent an astonishing four months in the Top 5 on the Canadian Rock charts, including several weeks at #2 at a time when U2 and Green Day monopolized the #1 position. Current single, “Better Now”, is rising on the Canadian rock charts and has quickly begun to cross over to Pop radio, where it is already Top 20 on the Hot AC (Adult Contemporary) charts.

Collective Soul have had an exceptional string of hit singles, including such favorites as “Shine,” “Gel,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Precious Declaration,” “Listen,” and “Heavy,” which once held the record for the most weeks at #1 on the rock chart in Canada with 12 weeks. Collective Soul, who made their debut with 1994’s Double Platinum smash Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, have sold in excess of 1.1 million albums in Canada to date. Collective Soul are Ed Roland (Vocals/Guitars/Keyboards), Dean Roland (Guitar),Will Turpin (Bass/Percussion), Shane Evans (Drums/Percussion) and newly recruited guitar player Joel Kosche.

Joining Collective Soul will be Winnipeg-based band The Waking Eyes. The Waking Eyes (Matt Peters - guitars/vocals, Rusty Matyas - guitars/vocals, Steve Sinkew - drums, Joey Penner - bass) lit a fuse on Canadian radio stations last fall with their Top 10 Rock radio hit "Watch Your Money." The track was the first single from their Coalition Records / Warner Music Canada debut album Video Sound. Since then, a second single, "Beginning," has also muscled its way into the Top 10 at Rock Radio. Both singles have received extensive support from video channels in Canada. The Waking Eyes have already won a loyal following of fans with a relentless touring schedule that has seen them criss-cross the country performing with the likes of Sam Roberts, The Trews and Marble Index among others. The Waking Eyes are nominated as Best New Group at the 2005 Juno Awards and will be performing on The Juno Awards as part of the show’s tribute to the Winnipeg music scene.

About Radio Shack Sponsorship:

When Lyndsay Walter, Vice President of Advertising for RadioShack heard that Collective Soul was going on tour across Canada, Lyndsay, a fan of the band, wanted Collective Soul in her media mix. Agency Promotions worked with Marilyn Guest, Marketing Manager, of Radio Shack on a bold "Collective Mix" for their 2005 Spring Wireless promotion. In the "Collective Mix" are a Panasonic MP3 player and a New Nokia 6620 video phone. For the first time ever, Nokia pre-programmed a minute and a half of rock video footage into their phones at the factory. Vintage Collective Soul video footage was synced up with the single "Counting the Days" of the Band's latest CD Youth and inserted into the Nokia 6620 video phone. Another big part of the Collective Mix is RadioShack's sponsorship of the Collective Soul Youth Tour and the opportunity for customers to go back stage with 5 friends to an upcoming Collective Soul concert and the bonus CD of Collective Soul Classic Hits with purchase. Go to www.radioshack.ca for more details.
