Storm of May 19, 2006

The morning dawned bright. As the day progressed the temperature rose. The mercury hovered around 88 degrees. Around 3:30 pm word reached me that a storm was moving in and to batten down the hatches. Hubby calls from work at 4 pm and states he is headed home. I sit outside watching the black storm clouds move towards us. At about 4:05 PM my brother and sister-in-law pull into the driveway all the way from Milton-Freewater. (M-F only got a bit of a breeze, and some rain). Just as they step out of their car a gust of wind hits us that has so much dirt in it that you can not see. We race to the house. Just as we get in, Hubby pulls up into the drive and races towards the house, back to the wind. As we shut the door the rain hits. A wall of water that is being pushed by 90 MPH winds slams against the west side of our house. Inside it sounds like a hurricane is slamming the rain against our windows. We have a big ole tree on the west side of the house, and the wind was so strong that it was blowing "logs" that use to be branches onto the top of the roof of my new house! I kept praying "Please do not let a branch break our window!" God must of heard me, because he spared our house. The sounds of the trees coming apart, I just knew that there was some damage. If I did not know better, this storm was on the edge of being a hurricane! Thank goodness there wasn't any damage to our house. Below are photos to tell the tale.

Taken out the patio door facing southeast.

Taken out our bathroom window facing west. Rain is just pelting this side of the house and the wind is blowing the hardest I have ever witnessed. If you look carefully you can see some branches on the ground from the big tree.

This is a row of trees that lined the lane that blew over like toothpicks. It was the only shade that the cows had during the hot days. As you can see they are huddled in the corner. There are 12 babies they are protecting.

The storm lasted all of about 20 minutes. It seemed like forever. I have never been afraid in a storm before, but this one really let us know what Mother Nature is capable of, and she pushed her wrath of furry down upon us.

The following photos are of the lane of trees that blew over. My hubby and all the neighbors and even their kids' kids were out with chain saws cleaning up. Everyone pitched in to help. Well, not me, I was taking pictures! Teehee......

So you have some idea, the above photo is taken in February. The trees are baren. But this is the row that fell down.

Here, it is early spring.

This was taken a week prior to the storm.

Below are photos of my yard after the storm.

Below is a photo of the tree BEFORE Mother Natures trim job.

Below are photos of the neighbors across the lane. Their walnut tree went down. It happened to of blown away from their house, so the only loss was the tree and its nuts.

Below is a tree next to the neighbors pasture. It did not get hit by lightening although it does look that way. The wind just ripped it to shreds.

Back in our yard. Trying to lasso a loose and broken branch so that it does not fall on anyone. Three men....need I say more. They did get the job done. One Indian and two supervisors! GOOD WORK FELLA'S!

The clean up effort. Thank goodness for all the kids. Their help was greatly appreciated!

We worked till 9:30 that night getting things cleaned up. The power went out about 4:15PM and did not come on until the following day at 8AM. We were so tired we just fell into bed. Since there wasn't any power though, we both kept waking up, checking to see if the clocks were flashing to signal that the power was back on. About once every 20 years we have a storm like this come through. There could of been more damage. The path the wind took was a very narrow path, and we were on the edge of it. The rain took a much larger path. Trees that you would of thought would of come down, didn't and visa versa. No semi's were blown over. No casualties. It hit right as people were getting off from work too. I love Mother Nature. Once in a while though, she can really put us all in our place.
