| Illesheim |
I am living in South Central Germany. This area of Germany is a big farming area with small villages scattered throughout the fields. It would be similar to the midwest of the United States. The town I live in is called Buchheim. It has no more than 50 families in it and takes about a minute to go through in a car. In the center of town is a large church with bells that go off every morning at 6am. I don't need an alarm clock. About 5 minutes away is Illesheim. This is where Storck Barracks, where I work, is located. Storck Barracks is a small base with two Apache units. The major town in this area is about 2 miles NE of Illesheim called Bad Windshiem. ( actually pronounced " Bad Vinds-hime" ). BW is were most of the shops, bars, restaurants, and activities take place.
Winter this year did not really hit until late December. We had some snow in January, and then came February where it literally snowed everday. As March came, we thought it was over. But we got a few more days of snow, the last being March 12th. According to the locals, this is latest its snowed in about 15 years. The farmers are glad its over.

Nurnberg
Nurnberg was the first city I drove to experience. I needed to drop off my rental car and everyone
said Nurnberg was a great city. So a friend from the army in Korea, Denton, and myself decided we
would drive the car up and stay for the night. After an easy drive to the city itself we got
ourselves lost within the city and ended up “site seeing” for about 40 minutes. It was a nice
lost tour. Nurnberg has awesome architecture and downtown, or old town, Nurnberg is completely
surrounded by a large wall.
We found the area of town Denton knew, parked our car, and proceeded into town. After walking about
3 minutes we found our spot – The Shamrock. We grab a couple pints and sat outside and watched the
world go bye. We then had a Donar Kobab (the Turkish version of a gyro) that was excellent. We
walked around town and took in some more of the history and bustling markets. The streets of town
were cobble stone. Being that this is Europe we saw some very interesting liberal shops mixed in
with the churches, castles, and government buildings. They do have some amazing mammoth size churches.
We came upon another Irish Pub, Finnegans, in the basement of the Victoria hotel and stopped in for another pint.
After a while we headed to what was supposed to the best club in that area – The Green Goose. We met
up with a couple other GI’s from a neighboring base and did some damage. With rounds of Red Bull and Vodka’s coming in the 10’s
we had lots of laughs and met lots of nice ladies. We drank, laughed, swapped stories and danced till about 7am.
Denton and I headed back to the car to catch a couple Z’s and headed back to Illesheim. Nurnberg was a
great time. |
