The Matley name can be spelled in various ways (Matley, Mattley, Matly, Mattly, Meatley, etc.)

Immigration - England to US of A - WHEN?  Was William the immigrant or was it just his father?  Was William born in New York or England?

1840 US Census of Lancaster Township, Jefferson County, Indiana, Page 9 (184), Line 28; JOHN MATTLEY.
Males - 2 five & under 10, 1 fifteen to twenty, 2 twenty to thirty, 1 sixty to seventy.
Females - 1 five & under 10, 1 fifteen to twenty, 1 fifty to sixty.
MY NOTES:  attempting to interpret this Census;
Males - 2 five & under 10 - could be boys who died (notice big gap between Aarron & Harriet in 1850)
1 fifteen to twenty - Aarron Matley
2 twenty to thirty - William Matley & John Matley
1 sixty to seventy - John Matley (will label him 1st for now)
Females - 1 five & under 10 - Harriet Matley
1 fifteen to twenty - daughter who has left home by 1850 (maybe married, died, etc.)
1 fifty to sixty - Elizabeth Matley
I do believe there were other children as William was born about 1810-1812 making John "the 1st" around 32 to 34 years of age when William was born/Elizabeth would have been about 24 or 26.  With that thought (if they got married at about 28 for John "the 1st" and 20 for Elizabeth), at a child every two years - there could be two to three more siblings for William, Aarron, John "the 2nd" and Harriet.

5]Background info for question 5
Letter from Aunt Arlene (Nora O. Mattley's youngest daughter] dated 13 January 2001.
"...... I knew Mom "Nora" had two cousins that never married & lived & are buried in Deadwood, S.D. .  "ETHEL MATTELY" & "ANDREW MATTELY".  She was a missionary in China many years ago (for 20 years) & they had to stay hidden most of the time, "Andrew" had huge ears.  Thought perhaps this gave you the idea for your "Elephant collection" maybe?  The "Mattleys" all seemed to be from South Dakota.  ......."
SO - who are these two people - are they the Ethel and Andrew Mattley Aunt Arlene spoke of??

MY NOTE:  Is this [#5b above] the wife of William Eustice Mattley [son of Luke Mattley]? or the daughter of one of the other Mattley's - another son of William & Phebe?  Will leave her as wife of William Eustice for now until have futher proof or until I find William Eustice on a census or other record with wife.

6] Who are these two children and who do they belong to - must be grandchildren of William & Phebe's?
Maria M. Mattley and Dall G. Mattley - listed as stepchildren to a Dall Campbell in the 1920 census of Douglas Gove Twp., Custer Co., Nebraska - his wife is Gracey born in Kansas (possibly Maria & Dall G.'s mother].  Maria is 10 years old and Dall G. is 7 years old.  They were both born in Nebraska, with Father born in Indiana & Mother born in Kansas.

QUESTION TO PONDER:  Due to my reading of the 1900 Census of Elysia Township, Valley County, Nebraska for Viola Mattley Potter - am wondering if Viola & Gabrielle Mattley were twins????  OR if there was simply a mistake made on the 1900 census due to both 1860 & 1870 Census recording the girls as two years apart with Viola the eldest.  ????  vlww

Where did they go after 1900?

Did Gabriella ever marry and if she did to whom???  Did she marry and migrate to Missouri????  Is that why we find Phebe & William Mattley buried at Willmathsville, Adair Co., Missouri????  ANSWERS ARE IN THE 1880 US CENSUS - ABOVE!  vlww

Question:  Due to my reading of the 1900 Census of Elysia Township, Valley County, Nebraska for Viola Mattley Potter - am wondering if Viola & Gabrielle Mattley were twins????  OR if there was simply a mistake made on the 1900 census due to both 1860 & 1870 Census recording the girls as two years apart with Viola the eldest.  ????  vlww

RE:  Amy D. Milliken m. Henry Mattley
Hi Vicky, Thanks for writing.  I wish I had more information to share with you, but I'm afraid the info I have was copied from a 1907 Milliken genealogy that was published by Rev Gideon Tibbetts Ridlon Sr in Lewiston Maine. Since it was published at such an early date, and was immeasurably helpful in my own family research, I thought that there was some valuable information in its 800+ pages, which other researchers might find useful.  I transcribed the names and dates into a genealogy database, and uploaded to the RootsWeb WorldConnect project.  I'll bet I get a dozen e-mails a week asking about one particular family or another. So, in essence, I am not related to the family that you are interested in, at least not on this side of the ocean.  I've done no independant research into any of these families by my own, so all I have is what was written in the book.  Wish I could have been more help.  If you are interest! ed in the Milliken ancestors, I have TONS of info, but nothing further on the Mattley family. Sorry.   --Mike Milliken

Mattley was born in England yet most of her life has been spent in this country.  When but four years old she came to Iowa and after staying there for five years moved to Missouri.  While here she met Mr. Mattley whom she married in 1875.  In 1877 they moved to Nebraska and settled on the farm on which she now resides.  Mr. Mattley died in November, 1903, but as his wife was a business woman, the farm has been operated successully nevertheless.''

''EARLY COUNTRY SETTLER BURIED AT ORD SUNDAY
Elizabeth Jane, second daughter of Sarah and William Erridge, was born at Ramsgate, Kent, England, on October 6, 1858 and died at her home in Ord, Nebraska January 26, 1928 aged 69 years, 3 months and 20 days.  She was married to Luke Mattley in Schuyler County, Missouri, August 26, 1875. To this union was born five children, two of whom are deceased.  They are Orville who died in infancy, and Mrs. Stella McLain, who died November 19, 1924.  Those remaining are Eustice of Burwell, Mrs. Nora Williams of Ansley, and Mrs. Edith Moser of Ord, Nebraska.  In the fall of 1877 Mrs. Mattley with her husband came to Valley County as pioneers and established their home on a claim fifteen miles northwest of Ord, where they continued to reside until the death of her husband, which occured on November 10, 1903.  Together they had experienced the privations inhirent to pioneer life in this part of Nebraska and had their part in the development of the country. Several years ago Mrs. Mattley removed to Ord, where she had her home at the time of her death.  She was well and favorably known as an early settler here and was a good neighor, a devoted mother, loyal to her home and friends.  Besides her own family, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sarah Sheffield of Los Gatos, California and eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  She also leaves behind a large number of friends and neighbors to mourn her passing.  Mrs. Mattley united with the Baptist Church at the age of 16, and ever after lived a consistent Christian life.  Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Ord, Sunday afternoon, Rev. J.A. Moorman being in charge.''

Hi, Vicky:  Just a quick reply to let you know I received your response and to tell you that there has been a lot of research done on the Erridge family in Deal by a number of people.  Unfortunately, I do not have it all on computer but we will figure that one out shortly.  At the moment I can tell you that Sarah West Atwell Erridge decided to emigrate to the US after the drowning in the North Sea of her husband, William.  As far as I know she took all five of her children with her.  Her daughter, Sarah West Erridge married John Warren Sheffield 08 Sep 1874 at Juniette, Nebraska.
