NEHEMIAH BRUSH (Israel 4, Timothy 3, Thomas 2,1), born 5 Feb. 1777 at Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., N.J., applied for a pension 2 Dec. 1839, age 63, stating he entered the U.S. service at Philadelphia on 26 June 1803 and served on the ships Philadelphia & Constitution until his leg caused his discharge. On 19 Oct. 1846 ("now past 69"), he filed a second application, stating he was born in Hunterdon Co. (Family Bible record) and enlisted from Hunterdon Co., at Philadelphia on 8 Sept. 1794 as a soldier in Capt. Cornelius Snyder's company of the First Regt. U.S. Infantry. Later he was transferred to Capt. Lyman's company of the Second U.S. Infantry. He served three years with Gen. Wayne in the Western Territory and was discharged at Presque Isle, Penn. In June 1798 he again enlisted in the Second Infantry, serving under Gen. Wilkinson for five years. He was honorably, discharged at S.W. Point, Tenn. In June 1803 he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served under Capt. Osborn on the Ship Philadelphia. He was on board when the ship was taken by the Turks in Tripoli Harbour. He was a prisoner in Tripoli for nineteen months and underwent much suffering. He was discharged at Washington in Nov. 1805. When with Wayne he cut his leg with an axe and later hurt the injured leg in a cable accident on the Philadelphia, which caused his discharge. He had never recovered from the injury. He owned no property and had excellent character letters which showed he had lived in Erie Co., Penn., until 1826. In 1846 he was residing with his son-in-law (name not given) at Canton, Fulton Co., Ill.*). Authorities: 20.
