PASSING OF MRS. SILAS DAY
Martha E. Day, daughter of George and Mary Flora was born in Monroe County, Indiana,
Dec. 24, 1854, and died Oct., 6, 1920, at her home in Cedar Township, Monroe
County, Iowa.
In 1866 she came from Indiana with her parents to Monroe county, Iowa, where
she resided until death.
On May 4, 1871, she was united in marriage to Silas W. Day. To this union was
born ten children, four sons, J. Freeman, G. Harvey and Clarence C. of Lovilia
and James M. of Belvadere, Neb.; six daughters, Mrs. Mary Ream, Brush, Colo.,
Mrs. Lilly Richmond, Mrs. Grace Robinson, Mrs. Elina Phipps* and Mrs. Laura
Funk** of Cedar township, one daughter having died in infancy.
When 14 years of age she was converted and united with the M.P. church at the
White school house. Later she united with the United Brethren church of which
she remained a member until death. Sister Day was a consistent christain;
devoted to her family.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, four sons, five daughters,
twenty-seven grand-children, four great-grand children and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Geo. J. Cornford of Albia assisted by
the U.B. and M.E. pastors of Lovilia, from the M.E. church, Saturday afternoon,
October 9, at 2:00 o'clock. Her remains were laid to rest in Woodland cemetery
to await the Resurrection morning.
