I will certainly look out for the death of William when I next go to the archives. If he died before the family emigrated, then he would have been in his twenties or thirties, probably. Maybe he died at sea, in which case there is likely to be a newspaper report.E-mail from May Newman Friday, February 08, 2002 12:06 PM
Hi, Vicky: Just a quick reply to let you know I received your response and to tell you that there has been a lot of research done on the Erridge family in Deal by a number of people. Unfortunately, I do not have it all on computer but we will figure that one out shortly.
At the moment I can tell you that Sarah West Atwell Erridge decided to emigrate to the US after the drowning in the North Sea of her husband, William. As far as I know she took all five of her children with her. Her daughter, Sarah West Erridge married John Warren Sheffield 08 Sep 1874 at Juniette, Nebraska.
Have you ever heard of Herbert Erridge Hill who is a descendant of Sarah West Erridge and John Sheffield.
If you don't contact him, I will send everything I have on the Sheffield family while figuring out how to send the UK "tree". MayE-mail from May Newman dated Saturday, February 09, 2002 1:05 PM
Hello, Vicky: I will try to answer your questions as they occur but am afraid that I have very few answers. Again Herb would be a better person to address them to.
Just to set the picture: At the end of the 1600's there was a Robert Erridge who married an Elizabeth, then a Robert who married a Mary. This latter family had nine children, one of whom was an Edward, who is my direct ancestor. He married a Mary Reynolds 1762. Another son, Robert, who married a Mary Estes in 1754, is your direct ancestor.
Your Robert was ch 04 Feb 1727 at Ringwould and married Mary Estes 21Jan 1754 at Deal. Their second son, Nicholas, ch 23 Mar 1757m married a Mary Packer 06 Jan 1784 at Deal. Their second son, Edward, ch 16 Nov 1798 married a Mary Ann Jarman 22 Jul 1823. Their son, William Thomas, ch 10 Jan 1834, Deal married Sarah West Atwell, 27 Aug 1854 at Deal.
I realize this is not the correct way to go about a "tree" but it gives you something immediately to look at.
The Erridge men were for the most part mariners, living as they did on the east coast, in Deal and Ringwould. They also manned lifeboats, a very dangerous task, so if they weren't drowned while on their own tasks, they were likely to drown while assisting others. If you are interested in this aspect of their lives, I have a number of pages taken from The Heroes of Goodwin Sands which were sent to me by one of the researchers with whom I am in contact. I will gladly photocopy the sheets and send them by snail mail if you give me your address.
Now to your questions from your first reply. William Erridge has a second name of Thomas, and his parents were Edward Erridge and Mary Ann Jarman (as mentioned above) Sarah Atwell's mother was a Mary Farley and Sarah was ch 09 Oct 1836. The children I have for William and Sarah are:
James Henry, ch 08 Apr 1855
Sarah West, ch 07 Oct 1856, who married John Sheffield
Elizabeth Jane ch 0ct 1858 (thanks for the date)
Mary Atwell ?
William Thomas ?
Is it possible that you could find information on them from US sources as I would think that Sarah brought all of her children to the US.
Now to your second message:
Possibly Herb may know about the date of emigration but I believe it was shortly after William's drowning, probably the same year. It intrigues me to think of a new widow making the decision to emigrate with all those very, very young children. I wonder if she had a relative to whom she came! Enough for this time. May

"...... I was at the Cathedral archives last week at Canterbury and decided to look for any of my family names that appeared in the Parish registers of St. Georges church in Ramsgate. I found:
October 9th 1837 Sarah West Atwell daughter of John Atwell
and Mary Farley Atwell.
Feb 18th 1838 Anne Atwell daughter of John and Mary Atwell
March 23rd 1851 Richard Noler Atwell son of John & Mary AtwellThis suggests to me that we are of the same family as John Atwells father was Richard Knowler Atwell. As literacy wasn't so good in those days its possible that John wished to name the child after his father but got the spelling wrong! I have yet to discover where the name Knowler came from though it is a very common Kentish name. ...... Finally "ereson" on John Atwells tombstone can be explained. Richard Atwell and his large family lived in an area of Ramsgate called Hereson. In the South of England we have the habit of dropping the first "H" of a word in conversation . (Dick Van Dyke rather overdid this habit in Mary Poppins!) It's possible that this is how John relatives pronounced it and thats how it appeared in the records. ......" Trina
