If early childhood memory serves me correctly, Aunt Sadie might have lived somewhere near the the north side grade school in Broken Bow, Custer County, Nebraska. I have a very faint memory of visiting her on the way to school or on the way home. I attended that particular school from 3rd grade thru 6th grade; so, the years would have been approximately 1955-1959. This could very well be true; as, she did not die until 1962. [vlww 2002]

BERT MARSH FAMILY
by Floreine Campbell
It seems a long time since we left the community north of Westerville. but it remains a happy interesting part of our lives.
My father, Herbert (Bert) Marsh, came from England as a young lad. His family first settled at Exeter, Nebraska, where Grandad, Frances Marsh, had a meat market.
In a few years, they came on to a homestead near Clear Creek in Custer County. Mother, Sarah Farrell, born in Iowa, came with her parents, Michael and Laura Farrell, to a homestead nearby the Marsh family. She was eight years old when this trip was made by covered wagon.
Mother and Dad were married in 1897. They resided on a farm near their parents for quite a few years. My brother, Cecil, was born there. My younger sister, Irma, and I were born in Ansley, Nebraska.
Dad purchased a farm in Cherry County, about four miles north of Valentine, and we lived there until 1918. At that time they leased the farm in Cherry County and we came back to Custer County. We moved to the Parmenter farm, and later to the Mrs. B. J. Tierney place. We were there for a number of years. My sister and I finished our school days at Dry Valley High.
We made many lifetime friends in this locality. The names that come to my memory are: Bill and Andy AlIens, the Scott families, the Garnisses, all of the Glover families, and the Carl Lecks.
We were a close family unit, and it was with much sadness that we lost our brother in September, 1939. In July. 1941, our dad died. Mother came to Wyoming and lived with me and my husband for eight years. She has been gone since 1962. They are all buried in the little country cemetery near the old Liberty Church.
My sister, Irma Marsh Benson, and I both live in Laramie, Wyoming. However, it seems to me that our roots are firmly established in that part of Nebraska. We have been away from there since the late 1930's, but still speak fondly of it as "back home".

OBITUARY: 1939 - Either Ansley newspaper or Broken Bow, Custer County, Nebraska.
ARTHUR MARSH (Ansley): Arthur Cecil Marsh, son of Mr. & Mrs. Herbet G. Marsh was born near Ansley, Nebraska on June 2, 1899, and passed away at the Hastings hospital, September 24, 1939 at the age of 40 years, 3 months and 22 days. He attended the local school and grew to manhood in this community and except for a few years spent in Wyoming he lived his entire life in and around Ansley. He confessed his faith in Christ and placed his membership with the First Christian church at Laramie, Wyoming where it remained at the time of his death. He was a loving son and brother, and neighbors found him ever ready to lend a hand in the hour of need. He had been in failing health for more than a year and though he suffered much, was very patient to the end. His death came as a shock to his friends and the entire community. He leaves to mourn his father and mother of Ansley; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Campbell and Mrs. Irma Benson both of Laramie, Wyoming; one niece Bonita Benson; two nephews, Warren and Charles Benson and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Liberty chapel, conducted by Rev. J. J. Ruppert assisted by Rev. Clay Deaver using "Our Satisfying Portion" as the theme. The music was furnished by a mixed quartette including Mrs. J. J. Ruppert, Miss Elsie Butler, Donald Hall and Marvin Oliver with Mrs. Jack Hanley at the piano. Pallbearers were chosen from old friends and were, Clyde Deaver, Billy Allen, Henry Garniss, Glen Glover, Emil Roessler and George Scott. Interment was in the Liberty cemetery. The large attendance of old friends and neighbors gave testimony of the esteem felt for the departed one and his family.

When three weeks of age Nellie came to Nebraska in a covered wagon. Her parents settled on Clear Creak, homesteaded and are buried in the Clear Creek cemetery. There is a cemetery and a church there. My grandfather built a sod house for them to live in. Mom went to a one room school house not far from the house. The Christian Church was also close by and her mother (my grandmother) was very active in it. My mom and dad met while he was working for a neighbor of my grandfather. They married young. (Verbal conversation with my mother ((Laura Eleanor Jones Williams Hockman)). - Vicky Lou Williams Winfield - summer 1999.
She was a housewife, farm-wife, Mother and Grand-mother. Nellie was also an avid gardner. I can remember her giving me my first tea and/or coffee - always with lots of sugar and more milk than either tea or coffee. I always found her loving and caring. Loved to go visit her. HOUSE FAMILY HISTORY
Article sent to me by Gary Herrington August 2002
No idea where it originated. (vlww)Bradford "Grandpa" House, whose ancestors came from England and Scotland, was born in New York State August 8, 1827. November 16, 1851 he was married to Sarah McGinnis in Joe Davis Co., Illinois. She was the daughter of Francis and Jane McGinnis and was born October 10, 1834, their descendants (sic) [might mean ancestors] were from Ireland. They lived their early married life in Illinois where all of their children were born. "Grandpa" House preceded his family to Custer County, Nebraska to homestead, but he soon returned to Adrain Co., Missouri, where the family had lived for some time, to bring his family to Nebraska in 1886. When they first moved into Ansley they lived directly north of the Christian Church. They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley. The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from the Lumber Yard. In their declining years they moved to the farm home of their daughter, Della McGowan and family. A comfortable two room house was built for them in the yard next to the McGowan home, which was two miles north of Ansley. They resided there until their deaths. Grandma died January 19, 1915 and Grandpa March 26, 1916. Both were buried in the Ansley Cemetery. They were the parents of the following children.
LAURA (1852-1930) married Mike Farrell in the early 1870's. She died at her home near Westerville and was buried in the Liberty Cemetery northeast of Ansley. They were the parents of: [1] Mae (Mrs. Edgar Graham) they lived in Ansley Community where their four children, Irma, Norman, Irene and Mildred were born. Later they moved to a farm a few miles northeast of Broken Bow. [2] Bert F. (1875-1957) married Nellie Potts in 1900. They had a daughter, Clatilla, Mrs. Paul Siegel, who resides in Central City, Nebraska. Bert worked many years for the Brown Fruit Co. Both Bert and Nellie are buried at Central City, Nebraska. [3] Sadie (1877-1962) married Bert Marsh of Westerville Community. They were blessed with three children: Cecil (who is deceased, Floreine (Mrs. John Campbell) and Irma (Mrs. Charles Bensen) who both live in Laramie, Wyoming. [4] Ervin "Ervie" (1880-1965) married Lizzie Mytton of rural Ansley. A son, Leo, was born to them. [5] Nellie (1884-1920's?) (sic) [should be 1884-1961] married Alfred Jones in 1904. Their children were Melvin (who died in infancy), Ruby (Mrs. David Anderson), Merle (deceased in 1963), Faye (Mrs. Charles Boyd) and Laura Eleanor (sic) [should be Elenor] (Mrs. Loren Williams. [6] Levert Farrell 1885, who makes his home in an Army Home in South Dakota. [7] Laura "Totie" (1889-1918) married Lee Woodruff. They lived in Lee Park near the Knight School. Their children were: Eugene, Helen, Byrl, Emma Mae, Esther and Leona. ................"

Came to Nebraska with sister, Gladys, when he was a young man. (their father, Benjamin Franklin Jones left and went to Washington state for a while.) My dad worked for neighbors of Michael Farrell for a while and then married Farrell's daughter Nellie Bell. His sister, Gladys Jones lived with them for a while." (orally from LEJWH - January 2000)
I remember him as a kind and gentle man who read pulp Westerns, listened to radio programs and loved to tell me stories about the family - where they came from and what happened to them. There is an element of truth in the stories he told me when you consider what may or may not have happened to the relatives of Michael Farrell and Laura Jane House. Grandpa Alfred Jones could have been telling me about the the Farrell's/House's and in my tender youth (about 5) I didn't understand and thought he was speaking of himself & My Great Aunt Glady's. One of the reasons for this research is to determine the origins of this story and to find out who Nellie Bell (Farrell) Jones' family were as I do not EVER recall meeting or hearing about any of them. He also used to tell me there were relatives in the Civil War and in the Revolutionary War --- research will tell. :o) VLWW

MY NOTES: I remember Aunt Ruby as being very matter of fact. She did smile a lot though. One Easter mother & daddy had gotten each of us girls a colored chicken. When they reached a certain age we took them out to Aunt Ruby & Uncle Dave's farm so they could finish raising them. The next thing I remember is sitting at Aunt Ruby's table for a HUGE feast - you guessed it - fryed chicken!

Given to me by my mother (Laura Eleanor Jones Williams Hockman) vlww 9 Jan 2000Uncle Dave was always a favorite Uncle to me. Our youngest son, Mickey David Winfield, is named after him. As long as I live I'll never forget the farm in Nebraska. The grain storage shed, the pigs and Uncle Dave (I was 5) giving me a penny for each tail I could curl. Once Uncle Dave and Aunt Ruby moved to Missouri we didn't get to see much of them. Did get to spend one Thanksgiving with them - I was a freshman in college - Mother drove there from Nebraska and I flew in from Oklahoma. Uncle Dave and Mother met me at the airport and drove me to the farm. Have a beautiful picture of both Aunt Ruby and Uncle Dave on their 50th Wedding Anniversary that Mother sent me. I highly prize it! VLWW February 2001.

TOMBSTONE READING -- Jones, Melvin, son of Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Jones, born Nov 2, 1906 - died Jan 9, 1907 -- Buried near his Grandpa Michael Farrell in Kingston Cemetery, Custer Co., NE. This Cemetery used to be known as Liberty Cemetery and also as Clear Creek Cemetery.KINGSTON CEMETERY - This is a public cemetery and is accessible from the road. From Westerville, Custer County, Nebraska, travel on Hwy 70 6 ½ miles east, then 2 miles south, then ½ mile west. This cemetery is one of the older cemeteries of Custer County, Nebraska. It is located just west of the old Liberty Christian Church which is in the north-central area of Myrtle Precinct Section 16, Township 16 North, Range 17 West of the 6th prime meridian.
MY NOTES - Family story is that Aunt Fay had a baby girl before Melvin was born. The child was either miscarried or died after Aunt Fay was scalded with water from a large pot falling off the stove. Aunt Fay's life and marriage were never the same after this. Need more information about this.
Carol W.L.G. left a note for me saying this accident happened to Aunt Fay "while she was yet in school and why she never gradudated. She did NOT return to school!?"

FREDERICK WILLIAM HOCKMAN
Clair L. Chism - Asst. State Registar.
Lincoln, Nebraska: July 21, 1952.A wonderful step-father and grand-father. Always there when he was needed - which seems to have been a lot in the past few years. A man who liked to laugh and joke. A 'jack of all trades' when it came to fixing things up. His favorite place first thing in the morning was the coffee shop (cafe) - down town Edgar. Loved listening to his stock reports and farm reports on radio. He loved the Nebraska Huskers. Farmer in Clay County, Nebraska (farm originally owned by his parents but he expanded it and made many improvements). Fred was a Fifty year member of the Lion's Club of Edgar, Nebraska. Elder of 1st Christian Church of Edger, Nebraska and the designer of the church building now there. Believe he is also a member of Ark Sar Ben in Omaha, Nebraska (2002).
