MY NOTE: Samuel is living with his daughter (Sarah P. Gibson) and her husband.
MY NOTE: This particular Enumerator (S.C. Mitchell) placed a line through the "n't" of "can't" and checked almost all people on the 1880 census of Center Twp. as "cannot read" and "cannot write". He must mean they CAN read & write. vlww

December 3, l89l
SAMUEL A. GIBSON was born in Kentucky, February 2, l805, and died November l9, l89l, being at the time of his death 86 years, 9 months and l8 days old. In l825 he was united in marriage to MISS LUCINDA PEDET (sic), of Kentucky. Twelve children were born to this union, of which six survive them.
In l852, he joined the Christian Church and has since lived with a strong hope that Christ was his maker. Since the death of his wife, he has made his home with his children, being at the time of his death with his daughter in this county.
Through all his sufferings he bore it without a murmur; his longing was to be at rest. When asked by his friends if he was prepared to die, he said he saw nothing in the way between him and God, bidding them not weep for him for he had made peace with his Maker. As earthly objects fade from our vision they see more clearly the glory of a better land, and their departure is a glorious triumph over death, a speedy and happy flight to that fair home where their life shall renew itself forever.

That always explained why the Samuel Gibson who died in 1867 had the age wrong. There is a Samuel Gibson buried in Decauter Co, IA wpa records who's stone reads: Samuel Gibson, died 1867 age 74 making his birth year ca 1793. This Samuel is buried in Metier cem. I have correspondence from the late Daleth Wulf who said her mother took her to visit his grave and it was in Leon So anyway I thought they just read his date wrong and now I see that one was right and the Samuel in 1891 death fits our Samuel better. Daleth always said her great grandma was a Bell. Now with Samuel dying in 1891 rather than 1867, it explains why I find him in 1870 Census of Monroe Co, IA living with another Hinton family Now Samuel remarried to Rebecca Webb who died 8 Mar 1895 Monroe Co, IA. I think they parted company way before that though as she is by herself in 1880 Census and looks like she is raising some disadvantaged children. She was the widow of Abraham Webb.

Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2002 17:56:55 -0400Correspondence 1: From Roger Connelly, Tuesday, April 30, 2002 4:56pm - I was in Montgomery Co KY recently and found an abstraction of a court record which I think identifies 7 heirs of Thomas Pettit. Only the husband's names of the daughters are given. I'll forward my correspondence with another PETTIT
researcher which shows the contents of the abstraction. I've ordered the LDS microfilms of the court records - will see if I can't find the daughter's names.Correspondence 2: From Roger Connelly, Tuesday, April 30, 2002 5:01pm - In a PETTY family file in the library I found a typed abstraction of Montgomery Co Order Book B/44, Aug. 3, 1848:
"Jeremiah Orear, adm. of Thomas Pettit, dec'd.
Thomas Connelly one of the heirs.
Lists cash paid to A. T. Pettit and distribution to 7 heirs (then heirs is crossed out):
Jeptha Kemper, Thomas Connelly, Madison Grooms, Asa T. Pettitt,
Samuel Gibson, William Pettit, Samuel Pettit."
This confirms the 4 children you show for T D Pettit and gives the husbands of 3 more of his daughters.A typed abstraction of Nicholas Circuit Ct. Bundle 167 - 1839: "Thomas Petty was acquainted with Arthur Conley in 1806. Thomas Conley married his daughter about 1809. Petty thought Arthur Conley died Aug. 1815."
I descend from Thomas Conley (1787-1859), husband of Elizabeth H. Pettit (1791-1872), son of Arthur Connely (1764-1815). I have started correspondence with people who have knowledge of descendants of Madison Grooms and Samuel Gibson. I hope to reach someone in those lines who has a Bible record. I'll eventually send you a GEDCOM file on what I compile on these folks. I'll order Montgomery Co & Nicholas Co records that have been filmed by the LDS.
A typed abstraction of Fayette Co. Land Trials Record, 1797-1802, page 299-300: "Bejamin Pettit, and his brother Thomas Pettit - land on Silver Creek, and Dicks River, etc.
To settle dispute over land there was a meeting at the house of Samuel Rice in Madison Co., Ky."From your PETTIT work, do you think this Thomas, brother of Benjamin, is my T D Pettit?
PART OF CORRESPONDENCE OF ROGER CONNELLY TO TERRI K. PETTIT - Census records suggest that Thomas Pettit of Montgomery Co KY had at least 6 sons and 7 daughters born after 1794 (the oldest was in the 10-15 bracket in 1810.) Your Elizabeth must have already been married and away from home by then. I only have names for 3 sons and 1 daughter. So I would be appreciative of anything you might have encountered in your recent research that could identify any of the "missing" children. Thanks for getting in touch, and I hope we can be of help to each other.
