Subject: OBITUARY - NANCY J. (HARROW)VALENTINE/ TRUITT.
Date: Thursday, October 11, 2001 8:46 PM
Decatur County Journal; February 7, l907
NANCY J. HARROW, daughter of JOHN W. and SARAH P. HARROW, was born in Leon, Iowa, February 7, l852. Died at her home one and one-half miles east of Leon, February 4, l907, lacking but three days of 55 years of age.
Her early as well as the later years of her life were spent in or near Leon. But there were a number of years that she lived away from here, a part of the time being in Canada. In l872 she was united in marriage to W.J. VALENTINE. To this union eight children were born, six of whom are living.
August l3, l899, she was united in marriage to M.F. TRUITT, who survives to mourn her departure. Besides the husband and her six children, her mother, two brothers and four sisters are living.
Those in attendance at the funeral, her children, are MRS. ANNA CURUS, of Osceola; MRS. HATTIE PICKLER, of Ottumwa; and ARCHIE VALENTINE, who lives at home. Her mother, MRS. HARROW, and one sister, MRS. STEVENS, both of Leon, and one brother, MR. W.I. HARROW, of Nebraska.
When about seventeen years of age, she was converted and united with the Methodist Church. But a short time before her death she told her brother that she was willing to go, and felt that she was prepared to die. For years she had been in poor health. The immediate cause of her death was cancer. Some four or five weeks ago, she grew much worse and the disease baffled the best skill of the physician. She suffered greatly till death came to her release, bringing we trust not only deliverance but eternal life and joy.

History
Modern Woodmen was founded in 1883 by Joseph Cullen Root in Lyons, Iowa. He dreamed of a ___ benefit society, one designed to provide financial security to families from all walks of life. Root envisioned a self-governing society whose members came from local camps (lodges) across ____. The lodge system, which remains in effect today, nurtures community spirit by bringing families to ____ for wholesome, social, recreational and service activities. Over the years, Modern Woodmen members stood by each other through good times and bac. They ____ picked themselves up from the dust and shaken (sic) it off their friends.
What's In A Name?
Our name wasn't selected to identify our membership with any particular profession (logging, for example). In fact, it came from a church sermon founder Joseph Cullen Root heard as he was trying to choose a name for the fraternal benefit society he planned to organize. As he sat listening to the minister talk about "the work of the pioneer woodmen clearing away the forest it occurred to him that this was a fitting analogy for the task of eliminating a man's financial burden in the event of his death. Thus, Root chose Modern Woodmen for the name of his new benefit society. The phrase of America was added later to signify the group's patriotism.Thomas, David & Mary - Tombstone, Malvern Cemetery, Malvern, Mills County, Iowa, THOMAS - David Thomas 1849-1916 & Mary His Wife 1860-1945. OBSERVES 91st BIRTHDAY
by Helen Schmit
'' "Grammy'' Jones, as she is familiarly known to her large circle of friends, observed her ninety-first birthday on Thursday, Jan. 31. Open house which had been planned by her daughter, Mrs. Morrison, who recently suffered a hip fracture was carried out by Mrs. Delbert Wolkins, her neighbor, who came and spent the day with her. Refreshments of coffee and birthday cake, of which she had not one but three, and bon-bons from California were served the guests who called. Mrs. Jones, born in Monroe county, Iowa, was Eliza Ann Gibson and is the only one left of six sisters. When they were very young, their father died of small-pox while serving in the Civil war and the girls were placed temporarily in a government orphans' home. As soon as it was possible for the mother again to establish a home she brought the girls to her. Mrs. Jones' early home was in Iowa where she was married to Benjamin Sharp. Two daughters were born to this marriage. After the death of Mr. Sharp, she was married to William Henry Harrison Jones. One son, Harvey, was born to them. In 1912 the family came to the sandhills and took a kinkaid near the Saults ranch. Later they sold this and moved to a farm near Gordon, later retiring to Gordon and building the home where Mrs. Jones now lives. Mr. Jones died Easter Sunday in 1946. Much could be said of the active life of Mrs. Jones, her charitable deeds and her acts of neighborliness. Many friends have enjoyed her special fruit pies, being remembered on holiday occasions with pastres with their own favorite fruit fillings. Mrs. Jones' interests are her home and her well-kept yard. Her pleasure is always increased by her many neighbors and friends who call to help pass the time indoors or stop to chat as she cares for her yard and flowers during the summer months.''
MY NOTE: Sharp can be spelled SharpeCheck Fremont Co., Iowa for marriage to Benjamin Sharpe and for census of 1880 & 1890.
There have been many grants and aids in the history of Nebraska. One of them was the Kincaid Grant. What did the Kincaid Grant consist of? And, who was Kincaid?
The Homestead Act of 1862 granted settlers 160 acres if they would live on the land for five years and make improvements. The Kincaid Act increased the amount of land to 640 acres as an inducement for settlement of the western part of Nebraska. Not sure about the date but I believe it was passed in the 1880's. Kincaid was the name of the sponsoring senator.
Could his name have possibly been Robert Benjamin Sharpe --- there is a Robert B. Sharpe mentioned in a few of the Mills Co., Iowa marriage records as a witness????? There is also a long standing family of SHARPE not Sharp.

Mrs. B.F. Jones died Thursday morning of acute peritonetis (sic). She was sick but three days, and while her suffering was intense, she was conscious until the last moment and died happy in the thought that she was going home. She leaves a husband, two children and other relatives to mourn her untimely death. The funeral was held Friday at the M.E. church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Walburn. Miss Florence Elinor (sic) Gibson was born at Albia, June 11, 1864, was married to B.F. Jones, June 26, 1884, at Emerson, Iowa. She had been a member of the M.E. church for a number of years.
MY NOTES: This may explain why Alfred and Gladys are living with Grand parent(s) (Francis Marion Morford and Cordelia) and why Benjamin Franklin Jones is working in a brick yard in White Cloud. Did Benjamin Franklin Jones ever remarry and if so were there any progeny???? As far as I know - pictures and family stories --- Great Grandpa B.F. never did remarry and was always mourning for Ella. Nov 29, 1866 Apr 22 1943MY NOTES: Why did Florence Elenor state on her marriage records that she was born in Mineola, Mills County, Iowa when she was born in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa? Did her parents (Francis Marion & Cordelia Morford) not agree with the marriage --- she also stated her age incorrectly - she said she was 21 years old - she would have been only 20. ?

MY NOTES: Believe his birth date on tombstone is in error due to 1860, 1870, 1900 & 1920 census readings all clearly reading that he was born in November of 1857. We are grateful to the kind assistance of the Twin Rivers Genealogical Society and in particular, Jill Boles and Dick Southern, for scanning and editing of the biographies contained in this volume of history.NATHANIEL T. WRIGHT. Among the stir-ring and practical businessmen of Mohler, whose skill and ability are bringing success to them, we are constrained to mention N. T. Wright, who is one of the enterprising men who conduct the Mohler Implement Company. Nathaniel T. Wright was born in Iowa, on June 27, 1866, being the son of William W. and Elizabeth (Gibson) Wright, natives of Indiana. His father was probate judge in Indianapolis fifteen years before his death. Our subject remained with his parents in Iowa and in Latah County, Idaho, until he was twenty-one, having acquired his education from the common schools. Then he took preemption on Bear Creek Ridge and in tilling this and rented land as well he was engaged until 1896, when he came to the reservation and took land. He was steadily engaged to open this and improve it until three years since, when he rented it and entered the employ of an implement firm in Spalding and later another in Grangeville. In January 1900, in company with Messrs. Giles and Grass, Mr. Wright opened the recent business and since that time he has bent his energies and devoted his skill and business experience to the successful upbuilding of this trade. He has succeeded in a very gratifying manner and the company has already a large trade and a very flattering outlook.
On June 15, 1890, Mr. Wright married Miss Margaret V., daughter of Urban E. and Hannah (Bullis) Elliott, natives of Pennsylvania and New York, respectively, and now residents of Kendrick. Mrs. Wright received her education from the district schools and she has five brothers: Newman, in Kansas; Charles, William, Eugene, Frank, the last four residing in Kendrick. Mr. Wright has two brothers and one sister: Samuel A., at Lookout; William W., at Slickpoo; Goldie M., wife of Robert L. Ralston. Mr. Wright is a Republican and takes part in the duties of the patriotic citizen. He is a member of the K. of P., Magnolia Lodge, No.5, at Culdesac: of the I.O.O.F., Echo Lodge, No. 6o, at Mohler; of the W. W., Camp No. 612, in Mohler; and of the auxiliaries of the I.O.O.F. and the W. W.
Mr. and Mrs. Wright have been blessed by the advent of two children, Arthur L. and Nathaniel T. Mr. Wright is one of the solid and reliable business men of Mohler, who devotes his attention carefully to the prosecution of his business and brings to bear a wealth of skill and experience, together with fine judgment and keen foresight, which are telling in building it up in a commendable manner.

Written by Milton Gibson, son of Mary E. Tyrrel, who was born in 1873. Info on Monroe County families of BATES, TYRREL, JUDSON, DICKS, etc.
I was born in a sod dugout in Kansas, November 19, 1873. My father drowned when I was six weeks old. My mother brought my four brothers John, Jesse, William, Ed and me back to Iowa in a covered wagon. My grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Tyrrel *(ks note: Philander Lorenzo Tyrrel) lived where Leonard Vance now lives. At that time Smith Tharp owned what we always knew as the Bradley Ranch, and now the Moore Ranch. There was a little red school house on the corner and my mother lived there for awhile after she got back from Kansas. Later Grandpa Tyrrel gave her five acres of land just north of the new highway 34 on the right side as you go toward Mantua Center. *(ks note: Monroe County, Iowa.) Mother, Mary (Tyrrel) Gibson, married Ben Chidester in 1879. Kester, Thurman and Jim were born to them. In 1886, mother moved to 20 acres on Tick Ridge, just across from where John Fontinel lives now. *(ks note: approx. 4 miles east of Albia on Hway 34.) Fontinel's farm was then owned by Jimmie Deshield. This was the beginning of my life on Tick Ridge. It was condered the area bounded by the North Fork and North Avery and the South Fork of North Avery Creek. *(ks note: Tick Ridge: Mantua Township Sections 19, 28, 29, 30, Monroe County, Iowa.) On the lower end of Tick Ridge just east of Fontinel's on the hill was the Isaac Tyrrel farm (ks note: Isaac Newton Tyrrel, brother to Maud Tyrrel Dicks' dad, Osman.) Just east of my mother's was the Steve Martins. Up the road, where Curfew Acres now is, was the old Long place. Mrs. Long raised her family of Jake, John and Tom. Later John and wife Jess raised their family of David, Clara, Elsie, Willie, Clay, Marguerite, Gladys, Leona and Glenn. On up the road Willard Bates cleaned up and settled on eighty acres. This was later known as the Bill Lewis place. This was on the right side of the road by the forty acre Henderson timber. Willard taught school at Cuba and walked back and forth most of the time. My wife, Emergene, went to school with him and started the fire in the winter for five cents a day. Turning south and on down the road to the left was the John Sinclair place. Archie Sinclair raised his family there, and later, Willie Sinclair raised his family there. George Nevins farm was next. This is where Everett Long now lives. Jack and Barbara Long were raised there. There was a house where Johnny and Clara long have their trailer, but it was gone when we moved to the Ridge. Later John and Clara built their home there and many are the memories of neighborhood Rook and Pit games at the house. Going west from Johnnie Long's on the south side of the road was the John Johnson place. He had eighty acres which was mostly worn out by then. He lost it to R.O. Cramer of Albia for a grocery bill. John Hollingshead was a brother-in-law of Cramer's, so he got the place later. I worked for Hollingsheads for my room and board and attended Tick Ridge School three months in the summer and four months in the winter. The teacher got twenty dollars a month. I stayed with the Hollingsheads for two years. Emergene and I lived on the same place in 1905 and 1906. We milked cows by hand and sold milk to the cheese factory, which was just across the road. Jim Sinclair bought this same farm in 1916 and raised his family there- Vera, Mildred, Francis and DeWayne. In 1884 Elliot Bates had opened up and settled on the right side of the road. It was open land then. Later, Ed Bates lived there and in 1886 on the fourth of July a windstorm blew the house from the foundation. Jim Tyrrel, my Uncle, owned this place. *(ks note: where Howard and Stell Robinson lived.) Later on, Jim's brother Osman Tyrrel and daughter Maud, *(ks note: my grandmother), lived with Jim. In 1916 we bought the place from Uncle Jim. Our children, Milo, Hazel and Merriam grew up there. We also raised our grandson, Richard Van Weelden after the death of his mother, Hazel. Across the road south was a house that Art Dodge (Mina Chidester's father) moved up from down on the creek in 1898. This was the year that the Tick Ridge school house burned and was replaced by the one you remember. Emergene and I were married that year, also. *(1898) West of the school house is where Nancy Sinclair lived. Later John and Susie bought the farm and built a new house. They had a daughter, Pauline. Across the road from the Nancy Sinclair farm, Andy Riley built a house. He was a son-in-law of David Burnside. Later, Ben Boggs bought the Riley place and the Art Dodge place. Ben Boggs was the father of Dorthea Bates. Our youngest daughter, Merriam and husband Ira Dobyns started housekeeping on the Boggs place. The next house was the David Burnside place. He sold this farm to Ike Judson. This is where Francis and Edith Dicks *(ks note: my uncle and aunt) lived when Keith was born. Going north we come to where Artie Dicks lived. *(ks note: my paternal grandfather.) This was the Jim Vernon place. He sold it to U.K. Bates, who was the father of William and Clark Bates. I made my home with them for three years working for room and board and the privilege of going to school. Later, Clark Bates and his family lived there *(that was Ruth and Veda's folks.) Maud and Artie Dicks moved to the Bates place in 1924. Maud was the daughter of Osman Tyrrel. The children of Maud and Artie were Francis, Everett, Howard (ks note: my father) and Bernard. At one time, previous to the Dicks' living there, George Stokes and family lived there. On the north was the Kritzer farm- Willard Bates bought it in 1900, and lived there for several years. His son, Guy Bates raised his family there. This is the home of Regena and Verla. Howard Dicks bought this farm later. *(ks note: I was born in the house here, and grew up at this house.) Matt Wilson, an old seaman from Finland, lived on the seven acres across the road east of Artie Dicks. He fell while trimming trees and died from his injuries. He lived alone, except for a dog he called "Yackie." His last request was that someone would take care of Jackie. Where Ted Connett lived was the old Ewers place. Lila Judson and I hunted cattle beyond there when we stayed with the Bates'. At this time much of Tick Ridge was laid out to commons and there was no herd law. People fenced their crops and let their cows run. Each farm had a different sounding bell on their cows. It wasn't uncommon to go four miles after the milk cows. For entertainment, when I was young, we had literary meetings, once a month, led mostly by William Bates. Many were the debates and spelling bees. Every Friday afternoon school was dismissed and we had spell-downs. We even went to other schools, by foot or horseback, and would spell against them. Young people at that time were Clark and Phoebe Bates, Lila Judson, myself, Frankie and Cindy Hollingshead, Jennie, Johnnie, Susie and Willie Sinclair, and others. The new highway 34 now splits Tick Ridge in two. There aren't many of us left that knew Tick Ridge in the early days. The school house is gone. Our house had been replaced by a new one by Howard and Estella Robinson. Emergene and I have lost three of our four children. We spend many a day now living our memories of the friends we had on Tick Ridge.
