A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE HOLBROOKS .....................................
THOMAS HOLBROOK born about 1594. His age is erroneously stated in the original MSS. of the sailing list of Hull's company, now in the Public Record Office in London, as 34 at the time he took passage, March 20, 1634-5, for America. Depositions made by him at three different times all agree in fixing 1594 as the year of his birth, whereby it is clear he was about 40 when he came with his family and settled in Weymouth, Mass. This also accords better with the record of his marriage Sept. 12, 1616, at St. John's, Glastonbury, to Jane Powyes. In the sailing list her age is given as 34, so that, if correct, she was married at sixteen. His residence was given in 1634 as Broadway, Somersetshire. There is a hamlet of that name not far from Glastonbury and also two other places of the same name in the county.
He died in Weymouth, Mass., in 1675, leaving a will which he executed in 1668.

Much confusion has arisen regarding the early Holbrooks in this country and many erroneous statements are to be seen regarding them in various standard reference works; the first John Holbrook, mentioned by Savage, for instance, is a myth, no such person existing, but part of the account belonging in reality to Capt. John the son of Thomas.
There were other early Holbrooks in New England who were not descended from or connected with Thomas of Weymouth as has been erroneously supposed."
