"BERT F. and MABEL C. KIMBAIL (nee HOUSE)
by Genevieve Ritchie
My parents, Bert and Mabel Kimball, were both born in the Westerville community.
Mabel was the daughter of Ernest and Ida (Sharp) House. Bert was the son of Kendrick and Myra (Bourne) Kimball.
At the age of three, Mabel, with her parents and older sister, Maude, moved to Mayfield, Kansas, then on to Renfrow. Oklahoma. During that time she witnessed the opening of the Cherokee strip; although her father failed to receive a claim, as another man had staked the claim first.
She made two trips by covered wagon to and from Oklahoma, to visit relatives in the Westerville Community.
At the age of sixteen, she came back for another visit and met Bert Kimball at church. He had brought his mother in quite a stylish buggy pulled by a team of beautiful driving horses. "She was impressed." With her relatives, she was invited to the Kimball home for Sunday 1inner. The romance began from that visit. (The petite little red head from Oklahoma and the tall, dark man from Westerville) Two years later they were married at her parents' home in Renfrow, Oklahoma. (February 10,1907)
They spent their entire married life in Custer County, except for two years, which were spend in the Renfrow, Oklahoma community.
My parents lived for thirty-five years on a farm, two miles northeast of Berwyn. We children all attended Spencer Park School and graduated from Berwyn High School, except Dorothy, who attended high school in Ansley.
There are four of us children living. Three little boys died in infancy.
Claude, the eldest, now resides in North Platte, married Helen Turner. They are the parents of seven children. At this time all are living, except one son, Clair, who was killed in a plane crash in 1970.
Delbert, their eldest son, spent most of his young life with his grandparents. He married Donna Datus. Joeleen married James Rodzielski. Betty married Clarence Yancey. Richard marred Yavette Smith. Clair married Rita Stevenson. (Clair died in 1970) Karen married Donald Rogers. Craig married Phyllis Henry.
Arthur, also resides in North Platte, married Ruby Plummer. They have one daughter, Judy.
Genevieve married Forrest Ritchie. They have two daughters. Donna Jo married Merle Strever. Sharon Kay married Robert Foman. Forrest passed away April 30, 1975.
Dorothy married Marius Dobesh. They have three children. Karma Dee married Mark Williamson. James Dennis is not married and Deborah married Richard Dosek.
Bert and Mabel purchased the Kimball farm in 1944 from the rest of the heirs. From the time my grandfather home- steaded it in 1882, until my father sold the farm in 1960, there had never been a mortgage on it. It was always known as the White Clover Farm or the Kimball Farm.
Although we children were all married and had established homes elsewhere, it was always a very special event to visit the folks. There was always so much love and security there for each of us.
My father had a serious accident with some cattle and was in the hospital in Broken Bow for three months. During the blizzards of the winter of 1948-1949, mother, with grandson, Delbert, cared for the farm and livestock.
They celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in the Methodist Church at Westerville, with all children present and over 200 dear friends and relatives, including mother's sister, Stella Lehrling and husband, Elmer, from Renfrow, Oklahoma, and my father's sister, Ruth and husband, U. S. Louden, of Columbus, Nebraska.
In 1960, they sold the farm to Joe Rudloff and moved to Broken Bow, where they continued to enjoy their friends. They celebrated their Sixtieth and Sixty-third Wedding Anniversaries there.
There are thirteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren.
I think a granddaughter, Donna Jo Ritchie, at the age of seventeen, best expressed how we all felt about going home, when she wrote about them after returning from a visit there.
A Country Haven
Of all the memories which I cherish, the one that is the most precious to me is of our visits to my grandparents farm. I am remembering our last visit. It was a wonderful happy one, and I am better today for having been there then. If you could come there too, you would know what feel.
After leaving a well-kept gravel highway, our car turns: onto a rough, rutted dirt road which is sometimes impassable able due to heavy rains or melting snow. On one side of the road is a broad, flat field of green corn, on the other a field with waving grain; nature's gold. Farther on, the road makes a abrupt turn. The farm lies before us, protected on the north by ~ long windbreak, on the west by a grove of aged but proud trees, on the south by pastured hills looking like plump pillows, and on the east by a field of clover.
There stands the white, gabled house with gingerbread trim around the porch. A fenced-in lawn of blue grass circle the old farmhouse, and a large bed of brilliant, tender] cared for flowers perfumes the air. As we come to a halt at the gate, Old Brownie runs out to meet us, his liquid brow eyes pleading for attention. My grandmother, a. short lovable, white-haired lady, scurries out the door, wiping her hands on her apron. Kisses are exchanged amid laughter, hugs, and excited chatter. Grandpa, a tall, stately handsome man comes to us from the barn and affectionately greetings are again exchanged. Soon laughter, ringing voices, and cooking odors fill the house with love, warmth and security.
This is home to so many of us, a place where babies we] born and glad hearts praised God for His precious gift Where babies died and sad hearts asked God for a portion his strength and courage. Here children and grandchildren have spent many glorious, joyous, unforgettable hour playing dress-up cowboys and Indians, explorers, animal war and games which were played before and after m Here pets were raised, goats and geese, dogs and cats, pigs and ponies, calves and coyotes, birds and bunnies; each belonged to some loving young master or mistress) each was loved, played with, mourned for, and buried in the Pet Cemetery among the trees. Here children grew to adult hood, married and moved away, but they return, to give their children a rich education in Nature.
Year in and year out, the farm calls us home and we return to rediscover the beauty of life. Here one has no difficulty in reaching God. He needs only to walk alone amid the sighing, whispering trees and presently, he is awed that God is in this place. He needs only to see the creatures which live, reproduce and fulfill their duty to know that God alone can give that spark of life. He needs only to stand up the crest of a grass-carpeted hill; to breathe pure air laded with fragrances from growing fields; to see the sinking sun in its last moments of glory fill the heavens with flaming crimson, then slip behind the purple hills; to see the evening stars twinkle and the graceful moon climb in the heavens bathing the world below in silvery light; and he is no longer alone. God is all about him, in the earth beneath his feet, the sky above his head, and he needs only to open his he: and he, too, will be filled with the beauty of God.
Here lives the greatest happiness for me, to return to I farm, to remember joy and tears; to find dusty, forsaken playthings; to see new life, vigorous and sweet, all about …………" (the rest is missing - vlww)

" Vicky ............. The other thing I forgot to ask Aunt Eldora was when Granny Mae (Ella Mae) died. Her last name at her time of death was Sorensen or Sorenson and I know she died in Nebraska. There are 15 records each in the SSDI for Ella Sorensen or Ella Sorenson but none of the names from Nebraska were born in 1896. It's probable that Social Security was never notified of her death or maybe she never had a SS number. ........................ In regards to the Huntington's Disease, if there is no other records of it being prevalent in the Mattley's then it must have come from the Aldrich/Aldridge side of the family. The disease is a specific gene/marker that can now be found in a persons DNA with the proper testing. Contrary to old myths it does not skip generations, however if you have the gene/marker you may not pass it on to all of your children. My grandfather and three of his five children all died from it so he either received the gene/marker from Jonathan Sprague Mattley or Hannah Maria Aldridge.
It would be interesting to find out how Hannah Maria died. However since the disease doesn't usually start showing itself until mid to late forty's and many died young back then, she may have died before it was discovered. ..........."

Vicky ... I finally talked with my aunt Eldora last night. Although she is 80 she stays very busy in Hastings, Nebraska. She was having a hard time remembering some names, but here is what I found out from her. My grandfather's full name was Jonathan Leland Mattley, but we had already figured that out. His second son, know to us as Dale, was really Leland Dale Mattley, born Oct. 27, 1919 and died of Huntington's Disease complications in May 1966. That is the Leland Mattley listed in the SSDI. and the one you were questioning.
Aunt Eldora's maiden name is Campain and she married Earnest Eugene (Gene) Mattley. She lives in xxxxx and so does her oldest son Daniel Eugene Mattley. Danny Gene as we call him has one son, who I believe she said is 25 and single (I don't remember his name and forgot to ask). Their second son, Ricky, was killed as a teenager in the 60's in a hunting accident, so I didn't bring up his name. Uncle Gene and Eldora only had the two boys.
Leland Dale Mattley, second oldest of Jonathan L. and Ella Mae, was married but never had any children. Like my Grandfather, Jonathan L., he was kind of the black sheep of the family and that may explain why this piece of the puzzle doesn't have a lot of documentation.
Third child of Jonathan L. and Ella Mae was my dad, James Thomas Mattley, named after his grandfather on Ella Mae's side of the family. James T. married Clara Marie Anson, daughter of Robert Waldo Anson and Eleanor Mae Steir. James T. and Clara M. Mattley had 4 children (all living). Beverly Mae (Mattley) Dillon born xxxxx; David James born xxxxx; Roger Kelly born xxxxx; and Charlene Ann (Mattley) Guffey born xxxxx. Since neither my brother nor myself had sons the only male child to carry on the Mattley name from the Jonathan L. and Ella Mae branch of the tree is Danny Gene's son.
The forth child of Jonathan L. and Ella Mae was Donald E. Mattley. Uncle Don was a lifer in the Navy and never married. He also died of Huntington's Disease complications.
The fifth and last child of Jonathan L. and Ella Mae was Adell (Mattley) Merrill. Adell married Arthur Merrill from New England and they lived in Milford, NH. Adell also died of Huntington's Disease complications. They have three children and Aunt Eldora says they all live in or around Milford, NH. Timothy L. Merrill is the oldest. Susie Merrill is the second (not sure if she's married but wasn't the last time I heard). Debbie Merrill the youngest is married but Aunt Eldora couldn't remember her last name and I can't either. She said the last letter she received from Debbie was 1995.
Aunt Eldora also told me that a Chellis (Mattley) Hester, Lincoln, Nebraska (not sure of spelling but Aunt Eldora pronounced it like a rose trellis only with a ch) has done an extensive family tree on the Mattley's and had sent a copy to my dad several years ago. After his death Aunt Eldora said she contacted Nancy, his second wife, to see if she could get the book back and Nancy told her she had burned it and not to contact her any more. I don't know if this lady is still alive in Lincoln and I couldn't find her name listed as one of the children of Jonathan Sprague Mattley in the docs you sent.
Aunt Eldora also told me that one of my grandfathers sisters (she didn't give me the name or I didn't write it down) moved to the Ozarks and either wrote the book "Shepherd of the Hills" or is mentioned in it. She said it's a good book about how the Ozarks was settled.
I believe I now have sent you the birth and death dates from the SSDI on all 5 children from Jonathan L. and Ella Mae. ................................(private information)
I don't know if this means anything to the Mattley Tree but I thought I would give you a couple branches of my mother's side.
Clara Marie (Anson) Mattley born of Robert Waldo Anson and Eleanor Mae (Steir) Anson on November 9, 1917; died April 21, 1977 at age 59 from cancer. Father, Robert W. Anson born of Frank Anson and Sarah Francis (Felt) Anson. Mother, Eleanor Mae (Steir) Anson born of Fred M. Steir and Clara Marie (Valker) Steir. Grandmother, Clara Marie (Valker) Steir born of Lewis Valker.
Finally, are we sure of the spelling of Hannah Maria's last name? You have her listed in your documentation as Aldridge but my mother has her listed in my baby book as Hannah Aldrich.
I will try and find the book "Shepherd of the Hills" and let you know what I find out about Mattley's in the Ozarks and I would like to trace the Anson and Steir branches of my family tree back but don't know how to get access to the census records, etc. that are out there. I think it would be neat to see what European country all my relatives are from and how many generations ago the came over on a boat.
Looking forward to January when you send me more documentation on the Mattley/McGowan/House part of my tree.
