HOUSE FAMILY HISTORY
Article sent to me by Gary Herrington August 2002
No idea where it originated. (vlww)

Bradford "Grandpa" House, whose ancestors came from England and Scotland, was born in New York State August 8, 1827.  November 16, 1851 he was married to Sarah McGinnis in Joe Davis Co., Illinois.  She was the daughter of Francis and Jane McGinnis and was born October 10, 1834, their descendants (sic) [might mean ancestors] were from Ireland.  They lived their early married life in Illinois where all of their children were born.  "Grandpa" House preceded his family to Custer County, Nebraska to homestead, but he soon returned to Adrain Co., Missouri, where the family had lived for some time, to bring his family to Nebraska in 1886.  When they first moved into Ansley they lived directly north of the Christian Church.  They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley.  The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from the Lumber Yard.   In their declining years they moved to the farm home of their daughter, Della McGowan and family.  A comfortable two room house was built for them in the yard next to the McGowan home, which was two miles north of Ansley.  They resided there until their deaths.  Grandma died January 19, 1915 and Grandpa March 26, 1916.  Both were buried in the Ansley Cemetery.  They were the parents of the following children.
LAURA (1852-1930) married Mike Farrell in the early 1870's.  She died at her home near Westerville and was buried in the Liberty Cemetery northeast of Ansley.  They were the parents of:  [1] Mae (Mrs. Edgar Graham) they lived in Ansley Community where their four children, Irma, Norman, Irene and Mildred were born.  Later they moved to a farm a few miles northeast of Broken Bow.  [2] Bert F. (1875-1957) married Nellie Potts in 1900.  They had a daughter, Clatilla, Mrs. Paul Siegel, who resides in Central City, Nebraska.  Bert worked many years for the Brown Fruit Co.  Both Bert and Nellie are buried at Central City, Nebraska.  [3] Sadie (1877-1962) married Bert Marsh of Westerville Community.  They were blessed with three children:  Cecil (who is deceased, Floreine (Mrs. John Campbell) and Irma (Mrs. Charles Bensen) who both live in Laramie, Wyoming.  [4] Ervin "Ervie" (1880-1965) married Lizzie Mytton of rural Ansley.  A son, Leo, was born to them.  [5] Nellie (1884-1920's?) (sic) [should be 1884-1961] married Alfred Jones in 1904.  Their children were Melvin (who died in infancy), Ruby (Mrs. David Anderson), Merle (deceased in 1963), Faye (Mrs. Charles Boyd) and Laura Eleanor (sic) [should be Elenor] (Mrs. Loren Williams.  [6] Levert Farrell 1885, who makes his home in an Army Home in South Dakota.  [7] Laura "Totie" (1889-1918) married Lee Woodruff.  They lived in Lee Park near the Knight School.  Their children were:  Eugene, Helen, Byrl, Emma Mae, Esther and Leona.  ................"

Farrel, Michael
"THE FARRELL  FAMILY
by Floreine [Marsh] Campbell
I have been asked to write a story about the family of my maternal grandparents. My mother has been gone almost 15 years, so I will have to rely on memories of stories she told me.
Her parents, Michael and Laura House Farrell, were married in Illinois sometime in the early 1870's. Their two eldest children, Mae and Bert, were born there.
The family moved to Iowa, where my mother, Sarah, and a son, Ervin, were born.
From Iowa, the Farrells turned south and settled in Missouri, where another child, Nellie, joined the family. When Nellie was three weeks old, they began the trek by wagon train to Nebraska. Grandmother's parents, Bradford and Sarah House, and their other two daughters and two sons were also on this journey.
The Michael Farrells settled on a homestead a few miles east and south of Westerville in the Clear Creek Community. They made very few trips to Ansley or Broken Bow, as Westerville was the local trading post.
They built and lived in a sod house for many years.  The two youngest children, Levert and I.aura, were born here.  My mother was about eight years old at the time they settled here, so she spent almost all of her school days in a sod schoolhouse.  I believe it was called the Kimball School.
Grandfather Farrell died about 1900. His grave is one of the first ones in the Liberty Cemetery.  The three older children were grown and gone from home at the time of his death. Mae was married to Edgar Graham, and Sarah, my mother, was now Mrs. Herbert Marsh.
Grandma was a very resourceful pioneer woman, and she stayed on the homestead and finished raising the four younger children. She and her son, Ervie, farmed together for many years.
Later Ervie married Elizabeth Mytton, Nellie married Alfred Jones and Laura became Mrs. Lee Woodworth.
Grandma Farrell was a charter member of the Christian Church at Liberty, helping to organize the church and Sunday School.  She served the Church as Sunday School Superintendent for almost 30 years.
It was a great joy and pleasure to visit her. When she died in 1930, her children and grandchildren realized that they had lost a loving and helpful friend.
She is buried beside her husband just a few miles from the old homestead, where they had come to make a family home in the New Land.
Levert, the youngest son, and the only one of the immediate family still living, resides at a Veteran's Rest Home at Rushville, Nebraska."

They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley…The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from the Lumber Yard.

They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley…The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from the Lumber Yard.

HOUSE FAMILY HISTORY

They later purchased an acreage in north Ansley…The house still stands at the end of the street which leads north from the Lumber Yard. They were the parents of the following children.
...............................  CORA ADELL "DELLA" HOUSE (1870-1932) lived in Joe Davis [sic] [should be JoDaviess] County, Illinois until 12 years of age when she moved with her family to rural Mexico, Missouri.  At the age of 16 she came to Custer County with her family.  April 7, 1889, she married James Thomas McGowan and lived on a farm 12 miles northeast of Ansley.  It was here that their son, [1] Guy, was born.  They moved to the Algernon Community living directly across the road from the school house.  The drouth of 1893-1894 came and they moved to rural Wellington, Kansas and at this home their daughter, [2] Ella Mae, was born.  They returned to a farm 12 miles northeast of Ansley and [3] Floreine was born while living here.  They lived on this farm until 1905 when the family moved to the farm they had bought two miles north of Ansley.  In the Spring of 1919 they bought their home in Ansley, second house east of the school grounds.  It was here where Della passed away.  The three children born to Tom and Della McGowan were [1] Guy (1891-1939), who married Nellie Dady at Kellerton, Iowa, who was a former Ansley girl.  They were married March 14, 1911.  Their only child, [1a] Wynona, was born at their home two blocks east of the Christian Church.  Wynona married Wesley Sheffield at Long Beach, California where they have made their home.  They had three sons and three grandchildren.  Guy was a registered pharmacist and passed away while serving in that capacity in a drug store at Marshalltown, Iowa.  Prior to that they had lived a short time at Merna, Nebraska.  [2] Mae McGowan married Leland Mattley at her folks home north of Ansley by Bro. Charles A. Shook on April 14, 1917.  They were the parents of five children:  [2a] Eugene of Hastings, [2b] Dale (deceased), [2c] James of Cleveland, Ohio, [2d] Donald of San Diego, California and [2e] Adell (Mrs. Art Merrill) of Milford, New Hampshire.  Leland Mattley died in 1946.  Mae resides at Samaritan Village at Hastings and is grandmother to eight children and five great-grandchildren.  [3] Floreine McGowan married Harold T. Jackson of Belgrade, Nebraska at the Ansley Christian Church by Bro. Robert Smith on June 29, 1921.  Two sons, [3a] Robert E. and [3b] Richard T. blessed this home.  Floreine's husband died April 20, 1967 at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, where they made their home for fifty years.  She has four grandchildren.  ......................."

Subject: Re: Herrington
"Hi Cousin- .................. I have been researching the Herrington line for many years. Five or six years ago I published a "Herrington" book. In the book I have a diary written by Daisy Herrington. It talks about how they migrated to Nebraska in 1884 stopping at a vacant two room school house near Loop City to live. Ranson's cousin, Laura House and her husband, Mike Farrel, arrived shortly after with their five children.  They lived in the larger room, while the three Herrington's lived in the smaller room.  This was the gathering place for Ransom's Uncle Bradford's children, because they all planned to file homesteads.  Bradford House raised Ransom since he was orphaned at the age of fifteen.  Sometime after Christmas, Earnest and his wife, Levert and his wife, Endora House and her husband and Della House who was single joined the clan. According to Daisy Herrington's recollection, they slept all over the floor since there were so many of them. The book also includes Ransom's Homestead papers and pictures.  .....................  I have come to a dead-end on Stephen Herrington 's parents. I have been trying for many years, however, with no success. I know Stephen was born in Canada. I think his father was Thomas Herrington who died in 1844 in Jo Davies County.  Do you have any information on Stephen Herrington? ...........................  Hoping to hear from you - Gary Herrington
