Peace march comes through Taos
More than two dozen pedestrians with a deep commitment
to world peace departed the front gate of the United Nations
in New York City last January, destined for San Francisco in
June.
Walking from Cimarron today (April 20), the United Nations
50th Anniversary Global Peace Walk is scheduled to arrive
in Taos Friday (April 21). Thus far, the march has been
appropriately nonviolent, receiving no opposition.
"We haven't met anyone who is against world peace,"
said one of the walk's coordinators, David Williams of
Santa Barbara, Calif.
Adding that more global peace walks are happening
simultaneously all over the world, Williams said his
small band of travelers is "bringing together all the
sacred colors of all of the people of the Earth to
celebrate global peace."
The public is invited to join the walkers at 10:30 a.m.
Earth Day, Saturday (April 22), at Kit Carson Park.
After a circle-of-hands ceremony and prayer for peace
on the planet, the pilgrimage will move south through
Taos on the way to Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
The walkers are funded by donations, and a community
benefit will take place Saturday from 2-7 p.m. at
Planet Earth. Taos musicians providing entertainment
for the event included Jenny Bird, Ruth Shorter,
Space of Time, Tony and Tad and Little Rock Reed.
