Text of Santa Barbara Mayoral Proclamation of
"Global Peace Now!" as the Universal Human Resolve:

Proclamation
Global Peace Now!
October 23-24, 2002
WHEREAS, today all of humanity is seeking a pathway to global peace now; and
WHEREAS, October 24, 2002, is the 57th anniversary of the ratification of
the United Nations Charter; and
WHEREAS, the 1989 UC Santa Barbara Chancellor's ceremony with the Santa
Barbara and Yalta (USSR) mayors lighting the Eternal Flame Global Peace
Monument at UCSB was followed shortly by the end of the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations has designated 1995-2004 as the International
Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples, and 2000-2009 as the International
Decade for Creating a Culture of Peace for the 21st Century; and
WHEREAS, the Tree of Peace was planted in 1985 at UCSB to bring out
The Great Law of Peace Foundation of the Iroquois International Spiritual
Confederacy, an indigenous traditional culture of peace precedent;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARTY BLUM, by virtue of the authority vested in me
as Mayor of the City of Santa Barbara, do hereby proclaim the day of October
24, 2002, as GLOBAL PEACE NOW "Prayer Day" in our community and state
that a Sacred Ceremony and Council for Global Peace will be conducted at
UCSB October 23-24, 2002, starting at The Tree of Peace to further
"Global Peace Now!" as a universal human resolve.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official
Seal of the City of Santa Barbara, California, to be affixed this 22nd day
of October 2002.
