NYCLTCEN TO SPONSOR ANOTHER
FULL DAY CONFERENCE ON
RELIGIOUS/SPIRITUAL VALUES AND
CLINICAL ETHICS IN
LONG-TERM CARE

DR. PHILIP BOYLE TO DELIVER KEYNOTE

An all-day conference entitled Ethical Mandate: Reclaiming the Practice of Spirituality in Long-Term Care will take place from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Monday, December 7th at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work/Yeshiva University in New York City. Due to the increased emphasis on the need to integrate spirituality into resident/patient assessment and care, the New York City Long-Term Care Ethics Network will hold a conference that will prepare the interdisciplinary care team to identify and address the spiritual concerns of residents, patients, and staff. The event, which is being co-sponsored by Wurzweiler School of Social Work, The HealthCare Chaplaincy, and The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation will focus on the 1) ways in which spirituality may be expressed in a pluralistic environment, 2) different models of spiritual assessment in light of standards set forth by JCAHO, 3) religious and clinical perspectives on suffering, and 4) barriers to religious and spiritual issues.

Philip Boyle, Ph.D., of the Park Ridge Center For the Study of Health, Faith, and Ethics, and formerly of the Hastings Center, will provide the keynote address, and Eric Cassell, M.D., Rick Moody, Ph.D., The Rev. Stephen Overall, and Rabbi Dr. Moses D. Tendler have already agreed to be workshop facilitators.

The workshops, which will be offered in the morning and repeated in the afternoon, will be on: 1) Responding to Suffering: Religious and Clinical Perspectives; 2) Integrating Spiritual Concerns in Clinical Assessment; 3) Integrating Spiritual Awareness into Clincial Practice; 4) Claiming Our Own Spirituality: an experiential workshop in which participants explore their own spirituality.

Following the workshops there will be three role plays designed to put spiritual awareness into practice by having representatives from different fields role-play with three residents/patients some of the common spiritual issues and conditions that individuals working in long-term care are likely to encounter. The NYCLTCEN has reserved spaces in a nearby parking facility; however, it is suggested extra time be allowed for parking. For further information about the conference, please contact Dr. Susan Rosendahl-Masella at the Ethics Network. She can be reached by phone at (718) 796-2444, by fax at (718) 796-2444, or by e-mail at nycltcen@aol.com.
