On June 10th, the New York City Long-Term Care Ethics Network sponsored its eleventh conference entitled When the Unexpected Happens: Interpreting Advance Directives in An Imperfect World at St.Vincents Hospital and Medical Center in New York City. This conference was one of the hightest-rated conferences prior to our most recent conference (Dec. 14, 1999 conference on Organizational Ethics) and tied the previous conference's (the Spirituality conference in December, 1998) rating, with 90% of the conference attendees rating it as Excellent or Very Good. Special thanks to the conference co-chairs, Ellen Bartoldus, CSW, and Jeffrey Nichols, MD, the Conference Planning Commitee--Nancy Curry, Beverly Lyons, PhD, The Rev. James Gardiner, Margaret Flint, JD, and Susan Rosendahl-Masella, PhD--and Judith Ahronheim, MD, and Louis Gargiula from St. Vincents for helping to make the conference such a success. One hundred and twenty long-term care professionals and students attended the conference. Renie Rutchick, Director of Program at Choice In Dying, opened the conference with a brief overview on advanced directives. Three multidisciplinary panel discussions were held and we wish to thank Bart Collopy, PhD, Jeffrey Nichols, MD, and Clare Horn, ACSW, CCM, the moderators of the panels, and the panelists, The Rev.
