NEWS AND NOTES

Congratulations to, Ellen Bartoldus and Wartburg Lutheran Home for the Aging for receiving a $25,000 grant from the United Hospital Fund to educate all levels of nursing staff in the identification, assessment and treatment of pain in the elderly. The goals of the project include the development of tools to assess pain in both the cognitively impaired and cognitively intact resident and to develop protocols for the treatment of pain which will enhance the quality of life of our residents.

Congratulations to, Patricia Krasnausky , the new Executive Director of Cabrini, Dobbs Ferry.

Congratulations to, Dr. Paulette Sansone, Mr. Ilan Ledner, and Frances Schervier Home and Hospital for receiving an 18-month dementia grant from the New York State Department of Health to provide a comprehensive education program to Health Care Proxies of residents with dementia, responsible parties of residents with mild dementia, and the nursing home staff regarding advance directives, the role and responsibilities of the health care proxy, and end-of-life treatment decisions. Paulette and Ilan are seeking a part-time Project Manager. If interested, call (718) 548-1700 for details.

Congratulations to, Drs. Paulette Sansone, Louise Schmitt, Jeffrey Nichols and co-authors Michael Phillips and Suzanne Belisle on the recent publication of their article, Determining the Capacity of Nursing Home Residents to Name a Health Care Proxy, in the Clinical Gerontologist, Vol. 19(4), 35-50, 1998. Paulette Sansone has also published an article, Opening New Worlds of Communication, in the April 1999 volume of Nursing Homes, Long-Term Care Management.

Congratulations to, Dr. Susan Rosendahl-Masella , on being selected as a Faculty Resource Network Summer Scholar at New York University's Faculty Enrichment Program. Dr. Rosendahl-Masella will be participating in the Ethics and Science program.
