Introduction

It is not easy to fix what we are looking for in our search for teachers. If we were a large company we would be forced into creating pre-made job categories with fixed requirements. We are not . We are looking for people whose goals may be reached by working at White Horse in a way may be coordinated with our own goals. Furthermore, we seek to have diversity within our staff and, thus, may feel that an applicant which may at other times be less qualified may currently be a top candidate.

Prejudices

There have come to be some qualities which are necessary for success at our school. We are not looking for classroom managers, but, rather, for leaders. As you might realize, from this, we do not mind hiring stubborn, difficult people. If you are a "get along to go along" sort of person you will last about one day at our school. We are all driven to accomplish our goals. Below is a list of Virtues, and/or quasi-virtues, necessary for success here. (If you don't understand any part of this, write me. I need to know how to make these issues clearer.)

Humility: Upon first arrival, you will enter into a new culture and a school which has a unique purpose. It is critical that you be able to think clearly even when you don't understand many things.

Appreciation of Culture: Our goal is to make the elements of Western thought which now, in part, constitutes Taiwanese thinking clear within our students minds. In this way, we preserve the chance that Taiwan may be able to preserve its own unique culture. Taiwan's culture is not the same as others. If you believe in a naive sort of multiculturalism where faces change but people are all the same you will have difficulties working here. If you believe that all cultures are radically different and there are little or no shared elements amongst cultures you will also have difficulties working here.

Responsibility: This comes from me. As the leader of this group there is only one time I will truly become angry. That is when I am forced to micromanage a situation. We give all our staff a set of fixed minimum goals. If the employee merely accomplishes the minimum they usually just leave the company after a short time. The minimum goals are all easily obtained and those who cannot achieve them are fired. (Generally, this happens with people who feel that independence is fighting every given framework.)

Desire to become a leader: We look at our school as a place for training Taiwan's future leaders. We expect that our teachers also wish to become leaders.

Requirements

Degree: You must have a four year college, or university degree. If you do not we cannot apply for your working visa. There is no way around this so if you do not have a degree go back to school.

ESL experience: Actually, we have more success with new teachers who have not taught ESL than with those who have experience.

Drive: If you are coming to Taiwan to make a little money and take a year off from your life go somewhere else. If you think you can become rich from teaching English here, you are wrong. If you think you can achieve more goals here than many other places you are right.
