A Turtle

Why would I want to Make a Turtle Costume?

Back of the Turtle and the Dalmation Costume

Oh, what an easy costume to make!

You will need:

Green Felt, about a metre
Bristolboard, green or black for the back and white for the front
a black tracksuit
some paper to make patterns on for the shell
string or shoelaces

Cut the green or black bristolboard to a size that is approximately from your child's shoulders, to his mid-thigh (you don't want it too long or your child may not be able to sit). Make it into the shape of a large oval to cover your child's entire back including his arms. Cut the front in a similar way, only much smaller, just large enough to cover his torso in an oval shape as well.

Using the paper, make patterns that are square in the middle with triangles on each end. Almost like a six sided shape. Make them so they fit together on the large oval, remembering that turtles' shells are not perfect and this doesn't have to be either. When you have puzzled them all together on the shell and like how they fit together, but not quite touch each other, use them to, one piece at a time trace onto the felt, cut it out and glue it on the bristolboard. Repeat this until the whole shell is covered with the felt.

Take the front piece of bristolboard that has already been cut and draw a line with a magic marker down the middle and make lines horizontally across from the left to the right about a quarter, half and three quarters of the way down.

Cut 2 holes in the top left corner and right corner with a hole punch and the left bottom and right bottom of each part of the shell, front and back. Using the string or shoelace, tie the front to the back to fit the child, being sure to tie knots at the top holes, and only bows on the lower ones, to make it easy to remove the costume.

Have your child dress in the black tracksuit, put the shell on and there you go! Instant Turtle!
