Nipigon ‘84

By the summer of 1984, we had our own drummer and a name to call our band.  The name of the band was called, The Images.  I still sang and played rhythm guitar, along with harmonica, Dave Elliot played lead guitar, Dave Wright played bass guitar and Norm Dawydenko played drums.  We experimented with some basement recordings the previous Christmas.  There was some pretty good ideas, but unfortunately the tapes are some where in never-never land.

We only played in public three times.  The first time was at a talent show in the bar.  We rocked the place, but didn't get first place.  It didn't matter, because the important thing was that we played well together that night.  However, the second time we played together was the darkest day I ever faced in music.  We played out of time, the sound sucked, it seemed the harder we tried, the worse it got!  To make matters worse, it was in front of the largest crowd we ever played for, which was outside in a park.  Needless to say, we were slightly humiliated.  That night we definitely coined the phrase: "We should sell our musical equipment and get drunk on the profits!"

Our fortunes were about to turn, when Dave Elliot received a call from someone in Nipigon.  I guess he must have put our name in to play the Labour Day weekend in the Nipigon Arena for the following year.  Deep down, each of us knew that this was probably the last summer the Images would ever play together, so it would have been nice to go out with a bang, rather than a crash!  Learning what we from what we did in our last performance and the circumstances surrounding last year's Nipigon show, we decided to take proper action.  Firstly, we would play songs that we could actually play.  Secondly, we wanted to play at the top of the evening, so that we'd have the largest crowd possible and that we could drive home before it got too late.  We were all set and ready to play!  This was what we needed redeem ourselves from that fiasco in the park!

We practiced and practiced and practiced, until we couldn't get the songs wrong!  We were determined to redeem ourselves by rockin' Nipigon Arena to its foundations!  Finally came the day that we were to play.  Our entourage set out on a hour journey towards that rockin' town of Nipigon.  We drove our cars up to the stage, because that's what you can do with Arena Rock.  We took the stage and played two songs by CCR.  The first one was Effigy and the second one was Down on the Corner, and that was it!  We traveled 60 miles to play two songs, but it was two songs in an arena!  We played Arena Rock once again!  The crowd liked our stuff and as soon as we were finished we packed up and got out of there.  Of course, we left our calling card in the form of the entire front row choking on blue smoke that emanated from Norm's car, as we drove off into the sunset.
