In September of 1972, in
the heat of the cold war, Canada and Russia played off their best
hockey players in an eight game series, for the first time ever. 4
Games in Canada, 4 in Russia. The Canadians had thought the series
would be an easy eight wins. They had 14 of the top scorers in the NHL
and the best goalie in the world. But the Soviet won game one, 7 - 4.
Canada was shocked. The series would not be as easy as thought.
Canada won game two though, but they tied game three. The Soviets won
game 4. So, after the four games in Canada, the Soviets led the series
2-1-1. The Soviets won game 5 with a shocking comeback. Canada came
back to tie the series by winning the next 2 games. And so game 8
would decide the series. And in the final seconds of a tied game 8,
Paul Henderson picked up a loose puck in front of the net, shot, and
SCORED! Canada beat the U.S.S.R.!
