Imperial Unit Descriptions

Yes thats right - they are finally here! Here are the first of the new rules for the WET EPIC section of my site. Currently we only have the Rules for the Imperial side - and not all of them at that - but they are all on their way!! Watch this space for it will be continuously expanding as the Imperial War Factories Churn out new design after New Design.

The Imperial Guard utilise many different forms of Aquatic transport. The rules here describe units from most of these categories:

Boats, Hover Craft, Amphibious Craft and Sub Aqua Troops.

In the following section, Brief descriptions of the units are given to aid the construction of the appropriate models, and to give a bit of life to the rules! Following each of the descriptions is the data for using each of the Units. A compilation of all the specifications of the Units which are here can be found in the WET EPIC unit summary's section of the site.

Within time, there should also be pictures of al of these units in my gallery - I have the models I just need to get them all scanned in and put up on the site!

The Units:

Hover Craft:

These units are extremely fast over the water - reaching speeds equal to that of a Marine Attack Bike over land! The Imperium Employs 3 main Hover Craft, all of which are based around the same design. These are:

The Mosquito:

This is the most lightly armed of the three Hover Crafts. Armed with a light turret mounted gun (easily changeable to fit the drivers preference), it is the Rhino of the sea. Able to carry up to 10 troops across the water at high speed, this makes the ideal vehicle for surprise Amphibious Assaults. Its relatively large bulk in comparison is due to the larger than average Engine which combines the downward facing Air ducts to keep the Hover Craft hovering and the normal engines to propel it across Land and water alike. Pictures of my own model of the Mosquito can be seen on page four of the Gallery section of the site.

The Wasp:

This was the next stage in the development of the Hover craft of the Imperium. Based around the infrastructure of the Mosquito Assault Hover craft, the cargo/transport areas of the vessel have been replaced with enhanced weaponry and targeting systems making it a formidable enemy on sea or land. Primarily armed with twin turret mounted Las-Cannon, making it quite capable of taking on armoured foes alongside enemy infantry.

The Hornet:

This was the final stage of the development of the Imperium's Hover Craft Force, after pushes from the lower ranks to look further into Skimmers rather than the more crude reliability of machines riding on cushions of air. At this stage most of the Hull has been completely filled with targeting equipment and further enhancements to the armament have been made. The Las-cannon have been enhanced, requiring a larger turret to be produced to house the extra energy generators for these now tank-busting guns. A larger engine has also been fitted after earlier designs lagged behind the rest of the force under the weight of the new armament. These provide the armoured support for the Amphibious attackers!

Pictures of my own models for the Hornet can also bee seen from the 4th page of the gallery on the site - just follow the picture link to the Hovercraft section!

Sub-Aqua Units:

At this time there is only one sub-aqua unit open to Imperial players, but plans for more will be drawn up as the battle is taken further from the shore!

Imperial Guard Divers:

Everyone has heard of the Imperial Guard Storm Troopers but not everyone has heard of one of their more specialised units. One such unit is the troops specially trained for warfare in the "wetter" areas of the Galaxy. Trained to move silently and without trace through open water, rivers and even swamps, they can attack without warning to the most remote of enemy encampments aided only by their breathing apparatus and trust lasgun.

To represent these troops I have used 6mm Napolionic (yes - NAPOLIONIC!)Skirmishing troops. The quality of the models I used was not nearly up to the standards of Citadels work but they make a good stand in until I can find a better replacement.

Amphibious Vehicles:

The BullFrog:

This was the first of the range in Amphibious assault vehicles to be produced. Designed as a specific Amphibious Assault platform, it is covered in heavy Bolters and all manner of short ranged weaponry. It is powered by a standard Leman Russ Engine which has been adapted to switch automatically to a propeller drive when entering deep water. Although slower in the water than over land, it is still capable of a fair pace - enough to make an assault and keep the element of surprise. Easier to construct and more reliable than the Imperial Hovercraft - these Vehicles have taken major roles in many conflicts across the galaxy acting as the perfect support weapon for Imperial Diver units.

The Crocodile:

Slightly larger than its close quarters cousin, the Bullfrog, The Crocodile Class Amphibious Vehicle has the range that the Bullfrog lacks. Armed with a mixture of Battle Cannon and Las - cannon, these amphibious tanks still have the speed to make effective assault units from the sea. Aimed to be the Long range support for amphibious Assault made by the Imperium's other aquatic units, the crocodile is more than capable of fulfilling its role.

The Scuba:

This is the largest of the 3 main Amphibious vehicles currently employed by the Imperial forces. Based around the model of the Leman Russ Demolisher, this is a fearsome beast at long range and close quarters equally. Its extra speed over land was achieved by replacing the Demolisher's close range weapons systems with deadly (but lighter) close combat weapons all along the sides of the vehicle and removing some of the outer armour to make room for the longer ranged Lascannon. Cutting blades and chain-swords make this monstrosity look more akin to the forces of chaos - but strikes fear into all.

The Boats:

The Blowfish:

The Blowfish remains to this day the Imperiums number one landing vehicle. Its Huge cargo bay makes it easily possible to transport 20 fully equipped troops or two battle tanks across open expanses of water. Even when fully laden it manages to remain very shallow in the water - enabling it to take its cargo right up a beachead and avoid them having to risk getting bogged down in the soft sands of the shorelines. Armed with a plethora of bolters it is well capable of standing ground at short range and in assaults. Due to its design some of the troops onboard are also given the opportunity to add their fire to the torrent over the top of the open-topped cargo area (see "Firepower" page 18 for the open topped special ability). It is also fast enough to strike without warning to areas otherwise un-accessible to ground based units - giving the Emperor's Finest the upper hand once again!

Aquatic Transport (4)

The Skeeter:

Designed primarily as a coastal patrol craft - the Skeeter is now used mainly as escorts for blowfish Landing craft. With comparable speed and decent armament in the form of twin linked Autocanon and Lascanon, it is the obvious choice to protect the valuable warriors on board the transports. However it light armour makes it vulnerable to heavy attacks.

The A.T.C boat:

The A.T.C. boat provides the principle air cover for the Imperial's Sea going fleet. Slightly larger than the Skeeter patrol craft it houses a Hydra weapon system. However, due to the attempts to keep the size of the vessel down, the firepower of the ship has had to be reduced - early testing saw accuracy reach abysmal levels due to the rocking effect produced by the Quad Auto cannon on full fire. As a result - the battery onboard has been programmed to give pauses in the firing sequence to allow the boat to remain steady and thus keep a decent level of firing accuracy.

Aquatic Flak

N.B. When I designed and made this unit A.T.C was meant to stand for Air traffic Control (Flak ship - get it?). However - since then I have realised that this is terribly lame. Any good Ideas as to what the letter A.T.C should stand for? Either put them in to the Guestbook or e-mail me - PLEASE!!

The Albatross:

This is the Goliath of the water. Well - not quite - but it does kick some! Designed as the Fleet support for inland fleets - it is mounted with a unique, medium range artillery gun for pounding inland positions from the safety of the water. This massive vessel is one of the largest in the galaxy to still benefit from only shallow water displacement enabling it to get up rivers and further inshore than almost any other vessel with its level of armament. Its extra armour and armament do, however, have a negative side. It has a speed greater only than the slowest amphibious vehicle - not something for a captain to boast about! However many captains believe that it is more than a match for anything else on the seas - using its fearsome long range battery and thick armour to protect it from anything and everything.
