Alva's Birth & Birth Family

Alva Mae (BIRCHFIELD) Dec 11, 1893 - Dec 8, 1993
(Her funeral occurred on her 100th birthday)

Alva was born in a dug-out in Ames, OK after
her father, Samuel Charles BIRCHFIELD made the
land run during the Cherokee Strip.

There was a final date that Charles had to file,
in Alva, OK in order to retain the land that he
had gained. So finally, he had to leave home and
while he was gone to Alva, OK, his baby was born.

*And therefore, he named her Alva*

Due to the hardness of life on the plains, Sarah
(Mason) BIRCHFIELD soon died (May 1894) after her
baby was born. Samuel was left with several small
children and a baby to attend to without a wife.
Unable to shoulder the burden, he sought out homes
for the children.

Monroe & Sarah "Sally" DAVIS were very close
friends of the BIRCHFIELDS and so Samuel gave
Alva over to their care with one provision -
Her name was not be changed if they adopted her.

It is said, "they spoiled her rotten" as their
children were grown and gone and little Alva was
a plaything for Monroe and Sarah DAVIS.

Alva's birth father, Samuel Birchfield
(OT Marshal during time of Bill Tilghman & Heck Thomas)

Samuel & Sarah BIRCHFIELD are buried near to the
DAVIS'S at the Ames Cemetery, Ames, Oklahoma.

Samuel & Sarah (Mason) BIRCHFIELD grave photos
