The Madison Davis Family - KY - Civil War

The Madison DAVIS family returned to Kentucky sometime after 1860. They last resided at Madison, Monroe Co., MO and were listed in the 1860 Census there. I would like to learn what area of KY they returned to. They originated from Shelbyville, Shelby Co, KY in 1833, but it is unknown if that is where they returned to. Any information would be appreciated. Now, for some family stories, regarding their return to Kentucky......

The Madison DAVIS family lost their beautiful home in Kentucky, during the Civil War, when Monroe was still a boy. The Union Army came through and took all their livestock and set the home on fire. Monroe, his mother and sister were walking away from the burning building, when their mother told the children not to look back. She did not know where Monroe’s father was at the time.

Monroe’s mother and another lady went to town in the buggy one day, to attend a quilting bee. When they arrived they noticed that something was wrong - people were standing around in small groups, quietly talking. When they asked what had happened, they were told that President LINCOLN had been assassinated.

Monroe's granddaughter Margaret Birdeana, was quite an accomplished pianist. Monroe was a kindly gentleman and requested that she not play Marching Through Georgia in his presence. It brought back too many painful memories, of all that happened in the Civil War.

I can only imagine all that happened, and with the greatest respect and compassion, I dedicate this song in memory of my GG-Grandfather, Monroe Davis.

Marching Through Georgia
Marching Through Georgia
by Henry C. Work

Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song; Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along, Sing it as we used to sing it, fifty thousand strong, While we were marching through Georgia.

(Chorus): Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the jubilee! Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free! So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea, While we were marching through Georgia.

How the darkeys shouted when they heard the joyful sound! How the turkeys gobbled which our commissary found! How the sweet potatoes even started from the ground, While we were marching through Georgia.

(Chorus)

Yes, and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears, When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years; Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers, While we were marching through Georgia.

(Chorus)

"Sherman's dashing Yankee boys will never reach the coast!" So the saucy Rebels said, and 'twas a handsome boast; Had they not forgot, alas! to reckon with the host, While we were marching through Georgia.

(Chorus)

So we made a thoroughfare for Freedom and her train, Sixty miles in latitude, three hundred to the main; Treason fled before us, for resistance was in vain, While we were marching through Georgia.

(Chorus)
