In Memory

[ Zooming ] [ Restraints unzipping ] [ Controls beeping ]

Lili: Thousands of light years from earth. [ Gasping ]

[ Controls blipping ]

Lili: This is Captain Lili Marquette. Does anyone copy?

[ Engines blaring ]

Lili: Mayday, mayday! An unidentified spacecraft has just locked onto my ship. Mayday, mayday! If anybody reads me, please come in!

[ Dispatcher speaking alien language ]

Lili: Repeat! My shuttle is under attack!

Dispatcher: Identify yourself.

Lili: You speak english.

[ Whooshing ]

Dispatcher: Identify yourself.

Lili: I'm from earth. A hostile spacecraft is about to breach my hull.

[ Swoosh, swoosh ]

Lili: A jaridian!

[ Spacecraft zooming ]

Lili: It's a taelon warship.

[ Shooting ] [ Shots blasting ] [ Blasting ]

[ Birds twittering ]

Lili: [ Whispering ] Earth!

Dr. Reed: You're finally back with us. Hi, I'm Dr. Reed. I've been looking after you since you've arrived.

Where am I?

Thorson Military Hospital, about 140 miles north of D.C. You want to take it slow for a while.

Yeah, you're right about that.

You'll be stiff for a few days, but physical therapy will get rid of that.

Am I all right?

Yeah, for someone who just came out of a coma, you're a lot better than all right.

A coma? How long have I...?

Perhaps we better let you discuss that with a friend, okay?

Liam! Oh!

Liam: I take it it's a good sign she still recognizes me.

Lili: He's pretty hard to forget.

You look incredible.

For someone who's been a vegetable. So, no flowers?

I did bring some old clothes; thought they'd cheer you up.

Reed: I'm gonna leave you two alone to talk. Give you a chance to catch up.

Liam: Augur sends his best, wants to come by soon.

Lili: So, how much catching up do I have to do?

Liam: The taelons are gone, Lili. A lot's changed since the invasion.

Invasion?

By the jaridians. They annihilated the taelons. If it wasn't for you, The jaridians wouldn't have reached earth.

Me? The last thing I remember, I was hit by an energy missile.

Well, before the taelons rescued your shuttle, the jaridians took off with the I.D. Drives. They finally got interdimensional travel.

And I lost how much of my life?

3 Years. I'm sorry. But it seems strange hearing your voice after all this time. Never realized how much I missed you.

I missed you, too.

Reed: Okay, we don't want to overdo it the first day back.

Liam: Well, looks like I'm getting kicked out.

Lili: Liam, um... You never said anything about Sandoval.

Liam: They put him away for good, Lili. He's gonna pay for what he did to you. In front of the whole world.

[ Sobbing ]

Lili: Do you chauffeur around all your patients?

Reed: Only the ones I take a special interest in.

Oh... What makes me so special?

Oh, I don't know. It's not every day I get to awaken sleeping beauty.

[ Lili laughing ] It's so strange.

What?

Well, the sky seems brighter. Sounds are clearer. Things I touch just feel different. It's like everything's more alive.

Right, that's not your imagination. Hypersensitivity occurs in the majority of cases of prolonged unconsciousness. Bet your food tastes different, too.

I was gonna talk to you about that one.

That's what the doctor's for, to answer your questions.

Good, maybe you can tell me about this bruise.

That is from your CVI, which we removed a few days ago. Why? You haven't experienced any side effects yet, have you?

Side effects?

Hallucinations - They only occur when the mind's in a subconscious state. You don't have to worry; That will subside as the brain heals.

Okay. Well, if all I have to worry about is the occasional nightmare, I think I can handle that.

Well... Better get you back.

[Sandoval, flashback: ] You no longer have an earth-based physiology.

[ Gasping ]

Colonel Bramson: Agent Sandoval was responsible for the murder of numerous resistance sympathizers, as well as other crimes against humanity.

Liam: What remains a mystery is why you were abducted.

Bramson: And where your shuttle was headed.

Lili: I'd like to know that myself, but Sandoval never told me.

Perhaps he can tell you now.

Liam: He's outside in the hall, Lili. What Sandoval knows will go to his grave unless--

Lili: Unless what?

Bramson: His last request was to speak to you.

Reed: You don't have to do this.

Bramson: Captain Marquette has been gracious enough to grant your last request. So, if you have something to say, I suggest you get on with it. This is a waste of time, get him out of here.

Sandoval: For her ears only. Come closer, I won't hurt you. Aren't you even curious as to why I sent you off in that shuttle? Can you really go the rest of your life without knowing the answer? You are still too far away, I can only say this once. You are going to die in here.

Lili: Get away from me! Get him the hell away from me!

Sandoval: I have my own underground! And they will kill every last one of you! Every last one! Listen to me!

Lili: What did Sandoval mean by "his own underground"?

Liam: Ex-volunteers, other taelon fanatics. Ah, don't worry. They've never made good on any threats.

So... What are your plans now that you're no longer a companion protector?

Me, I'm heading for Jaridia.

No!

It's the new frontier, lots of opportunity. Everything the taelons told us about them was a lie. I wish you'd been there when they blew up that mothership.

So, I'm guessing that Zu'or is...?

Let's just say he's no longer part of the commonality.

So, how's Dr Reed treating you?

Why do you ask?

Seems pretty devoted to his patients. Sometimes I found him in your room at night, reading to you.

What was he reading?

He said your toes wiggled most to TALE OF TWO CITIES. Must be one of your favourite books.

I only remember the first lines: "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." Hmm.

Well, there's some things I've gotta catch up on. I'll see you later.

Lili: Okay!

Lili: Augur!

Augur: Come here! Whoa, whoa!

What?

Watch the suit!

Same old Augur.

Not really - Look.

You hacked off the ponytail.

Augur: Well, I am the C.E.O. of a publicly owned company now, and there's no reason to hide with the taelons gone, is there?

Augur has gone legitimate?

Yep, had to dump the Flat Planet right after I got married.

Wow! Now I know I've been in a coma.

Well, what did you expect? Couldn't wait for you forever.

Well, I hope you brought pictures.

Oh, yeah! Might have a megabyte or two.

Am I hallucinating, or is that a--

Yeah, you got it. You know, so much like his dad it scares me.

Such a beautiful family.

Thank you.

I've missed so much!

Bramson: How's she making out?

Reed: She's been through a lot; she needs time. That's the only way she's ever gonna trust us.

[ Sighing ] [ Crickets chirping ]

Tate: I'm here to see my sister, Lili Marquette.

Nurse: Sir, you'll have to come back during visiting hours.

Tate: Can I at least leave this--

[ Flashback ]

Volunteer: Remove your clothes.

Tate: Do as she says.

Lili: Ahh! [ Gasping ]

There's no need to be frightened. This will just help to prepare you.

Prepare me for what?

Tate: Is that possible?

Nurse: Certainly.

Tate: Thank you very much.

[ Zap ]

Tate: She's not here. Check every room on the floor.

[ Whack ]

Tate: You should never have brought those damned jaridians back.

Lili: What do you want from me?

Tate: Well, I don't want anything. I just thought I'd welcome you back home. Oh, come on, Lili; why the sad face?

Haven't you done enough to me already?

It's a matter of opinion. But unfortunately, I have some unfinished business. This is from Agent Sandoval.

[ Thwack ] uh!

Guess it's time to start taking Sandoval's threats a little more seriously.

Reed: I'm sorry about last night. We've tightened security. That won't happen again.

Lili: Something I've been meaning to ask you: Have you got a first name?

Michael.

Michael was my favourite name.

"Was"?

Yeah, until my boyfriend broke my heart. We were 10 at the time.

I hope you won't hold that against me.

I wouldn't hold anything against a guy who reads me Dickens.

There's something we should talk about.

Sounds serious, Michael.

It is. Um... Ronald Sandoval is gonna be executed in a few hours.

Are you suggesting I watch?

It might speed up your psychological recovery.

Well, I'm fine -- at least, that's what I keep telling myself.

It's your call. It just might help close the book on Sandoval forever.

Barry Calvert on T.V.: Ronald Sandoval, known throughout the world as the companions' bidder, is now being brought into the chamber. Less than an hour ago, his appeal for clemency was rejected by president doors.

Lili: "President" doors?

Reed: He was elected last year.

Calvert: According to reports, Sandoval refused to eat his last meal, to meet with clergy, or even to make a final statement. Clearly, this is a man still unrepentant for his actions.

[ Handcuffs snapping ] [ Valves hissing ]

Calvert: The process... [ Door banging ] ...Has begun. According to a spokesman for the department of corrections, this new method of lethal termination is painless. Blood, organs, and tissue freeze within seconds. Death occurs in less than a minute.

Sandoval: I never wanted to kill those people! Blame the taelons, Not me! It was my CVI! [ Choking ]

Bramson: Let her go.

[ Gasping ]

[ Flashback ]

Sandoval: You no longer have an earth-based physiology.

[ Lili gasping ]

Lili: It's black!

Sandoval: You should be more careful. Wouldn't want anything to happen to you, after all you've been through. You no longer have an earth-based physiology. Even if you managed to escape you wouldn't last 12 hours on this planet. Don't worry. You'll be departing soon.

[ Gasping ]

Liam: Everything all right?

Lili: I know every one of those soldiers.

Liam: Why's that so strange?

A lot of vets died in that war besides the ones I fought with.

That reminds me; I have something for you.

Present?

Something like that.

Ah-hah! You found them.

What's wrong?

I scratched the words "find me", and they're not there.

You sure? I believe you. It's just with everything Sandoval put you through, maybe you only thought you wrote on them. That is possible, isn't it?

Yeah. I guess so.

This must be hard for you. Come on, the Colonel's waiting for you.

Bramson: After examining the CVI's capabilities, we assume Sandoval was using you as a human surveillance device.

Lili: For what?

Bramson: To gather intelligence about the jaridians. Fortunately, his plan backfired.

I don't understand.

Reed: Sandoval knew that the jaridians would intercept the shuttle; he booby-trapped the I.D. Drives so they couldn't get ahold of the technology.

Bramson: But the explosive device malfunctioned, and human history was changed by the jaridians forever. You're a hero, Captain.

Lili: Well, I'm flattered, but I hardly deserve a medal.

President doors seems to think so. He wants youat the white house next month so he can pin it on you himself. The world thanks you, Captain.

Ah, when can I leave here, sir?

That's up to Dr Reed.

Reed: Why don't we discuss that over dinner?

Reed: Did you have enough to eat?

Lili: Mm-hmm, the wine made me a little tipsy, though. How'd you know I liked italian merlot?

I never reveal my sources.

So, when can I get discharged?

Uh... You know, another week. Should have you out of here.

That means I won't have you to take care of me anymore.

No, not necessarily.

Isn't this against hospital policy, kissing a patient?

Yeah.

Uh-huh... Maybe I can get The Colonel to extend my stay.

What?

I don't know.

You don't know?

I... I just... I feel so comfortable around you.

Is that a bad thing?

Maybe.

Okay, now I'm confused.

It's just that I feel like I already know you. All my life, I imagined the perfect man in my life, and then there you are. It's a little scary. That's probably not the best thing to say on a first date, huh? Maybe we've met before.

That I would have remembered. I did some time in the S.I. War, though.

Where?

9 Months in Kanpur.

I flew out of Kanpur. We must have passed on the street 100 times.

No, I don't think so. I kind of kept to myself. It's weird: I've never seen such carnage. So many people I couldn't help. So many people beyond help.

Yeah, didn't look any better from the cockpit looking down.

Yeah.

Every time I went up, I swore it would be my last.

[Sandoval, flashback] You no longer have an earth-based physiology.

Reed: Is there something wrong?

Lili: No.

Are you sure?

Mm-hmm. I'm just a little tired.

Okay.

Maybe you can walk me back.

Lili: Sinaui euhura.

Nurse: [ Growling ] Uh, did you say something, Captain?

Lili: Just "goodnight".

[Lili Thinking ] It was the best... It was the worst... Oh, my god.

[Lili Thinking ] It was the best... It was the best of times... The worst of times...

[ Smash ] [ Skin ripping ]

Lili: I'm not on earth!

Liam: I showed up at your room but you weren't there. Are you okay?

Lili: Yeah, I'm okay. But I want some answers. I think it's time you told me what is really going on here.

I'm not sure what's gotten into you, but--

There's definitely something wrong with this place.

Do you hear yourself?

Cut the crap, Liam; I know this isn't earth.

Oh, now you're talking crazy. This must be a reaction to your medication. Let's go find Dr Reed--

The problem is, I'm not on medication, and you're not going anywhere.

It's not loaded. The gun is strictly for show. Put it away. There's surveillance everywhere. If someone sees you with that we are all dead.

Liam: This Terra formed asteroid was created to gain vital information on the resistance. Nurses, patients, Doctors. All part of a elaborate brain washing technique, even Tate trying to kill you the other night.

Lili: So, that means Sandoval--

Healthier than ever.

How long have I really been in a coma.

2 months. There is no way out of here on foot. The perimeter is fenced off with energy shields.

What do they want from me?

You have information. The Colonel never told you that when the Jaridians stole the ID drive they took you along for the ride. A week later, the taelons found you back on the shuttle in space. The jaridians did something to your cvi. Nobody knows what, But Zu'or's intent on finding out. I wanted to tell you, but they said they'd kill Augur if I did.

Where's Augur now?

He's being held until your debriefing is over. After that, who knows what will happen to him, or me.

And Michael, was he part of this, too?

He's a prisoner like the rest of us. He used to treat wounded resistance members until the volunteers found him out.

So, what do we do now?

Play along. Act like you don't know.

Why? What good would that do?

It buys us time. There's a shuttle that's grounded, Problem with the I.D. Drives. If you fix the hyperaccelerator, we get out of here.

I've never fixed a hyperaccelerator before.

You designed the shuttle interface. The data's encapsulated in your memory.

Even if I could remember... But how am I going to fix it? You said so yourself: My room is wired.

They didn't bug the bathroom.

How do you know that?

First day they dragged me here, that room was mine. The resistance is finished, Lili. All we can do now is save ourselves.

How do I know this isn't part of the same brainwashing technique?

If it was, why would I tell you this?

I could think of 100 reasons. You might not even be Liam. You might be an android.

How do I prove it?

If you are Liam, then you'll know the name of the only man I've ever really loved.

William Boone.

Nurse: Captain Marquette? Colonel Bramson would like to see you, immediately.

Lili: I thought my debriefing process was over, Colonel.

Bramson: We haven't exactly been honest. It was well-intentioned.

Reed: In an effort not to traumatize you.

Lili: Meaning?

Bramson: We never removed your CVI.

Reed: We tried, But during the operation, you went brain-dead. The implant is located on your parietal lobe. The modifications Sandoval made to it are causing your hallucinations.

Lili: Why are you telling me this now?

We want to operate again.

Bramson: We'll have better luck now that you're out of the coma.

Lili: I'll think about it.

Bramson: Don't wait too long. It's your health we're talking about here, captain.

Bramson: She needs more of your tender, loving care. We should never have waited so long to remove the CVI. The risk of exposure--

Reed: In order for this to work, it's essential that Captain Marquette believes she's playing along.

Reed: Lili! Come on, wait. Wait, wait!

Lili: Liam told me everything. I just gotta know one thing.

What's that?

Were your feelings for me real, or was that a lie, too?

I wouldn't give up one moment we've had, not for anything.

What are they gonna do if I refuse the operation?

They'll do it anyway.

Doctor's recommendation?

I want you to forget the taelons' motives; fix the accelerator.

[ Zapping ] [ Clicking ]

Lili: [ Gasping ] What do you know!

Bramson: I want that CVI out of her, whatever the cost.

Reed: Why don't you keep in mind you're dealing with a human being?

I detect some compassion for this woman. Or is it passion?

You've quite the imagination.

No. She's the one with the imagination.

I warn you, if you push her, all this collapses and you'll get nothing. Nothing.

Reed: Shall we begin?

[ Equipment blipping ]

Nurse: Vitals look good.

Reed: I got a view of the implant.

Nurse: Locked on and testing.

Reed: How's the signal?

Nurse: Strong as ever. Ready for extraction.

[ Whirring ] [ Equipment beeping ]

Nurse: Vitals remain right on target.

[ Equipment whirring ]

[ Lili Screaming ]

Lili: How did it go?

Reed: Well, I hope you can adjust to life without a cyberviral implant. Why do you have that funny look on your face?

While I was under, I saw jaridians. They were examining me, I think, and I was terrified, but there was nothing I could do.

The jaridians wiped out your memory but couldn't get everything in your subconscious.

So, it was a flashback?

Everything's gonna be all right. Okay?

Liam: How you feel?

Lili: Better.

Any progress with the hyperaccelerator?

It's all coming back. I can't stop thinking about that book. If Zu'or wanted me to believe all this is real, then me finding a copy of a TALE OF TWO CITIES was one big screw-up.

The taelons never put it there. It was someone who wanted to warn you, Someone connected to the resistance.

Do you have any idea who that might be?

Liam: I guess. It's the same person who charged this for me.

[ hyperaccelerator Blipping ]

Lili: I'm going nuts in this place. Sometimes I feel so confused, I... I don't know what to believe.

Reed: I understand.

Do you?

What's that supposed to mean?

I don't know. I don't know anything anymore. The hyperaccelerator is ready. When can we leave?

Tonight.

Good, because I can't spend one more day in this damned fantasy.

Okay, it's all right; it'll be okay.

How am I gonna get out of my room without being seen?

Liam will take care of surveillance.

How?

You just be ready.

My bags are packed.

Once the taelons know, there's no turning back. If they catch us, you'll wish you never came out of that coma.

[ Zap ] [ Footsteps echoing ] [ Crickets chirping ]

Groundskeeper: Wanna tell me what you're doing out here, Captain?

[ Gun blasting ]

Liam: Get his gun!

Lili: That's where they're keeping them?

Liam: Let's just hope they're still alive.

Liam: Good evening!

[ Blasting ]

Augur: Lili, thank god! You all right?

Liam: Look out!

[ Blast ] [ Guns blasting ] [ Gunshots ] [ Blasting ]

Liam: Ahh!

[ Blasting ] [ Gasping ]

Reed: Liam's been hit.

Augur: Liam!

[ Blasting ] [ Gun blasting ] [ Blast ]

Lili: Now you're really dead.

Liam: Leave me behind!

Lili: Help him up!

Laim: I won't make it.

Augur: He's right, Lili.

Lili: I'm not letting him die here.

Reed: Give me a hand!

Lili: Let's get the hell out of here!

Reed: Come on! The shuttle's not much further.

[ Shuttle doors swooshing ] [ Revving ]

Reed: You can do this. We're running out of time.

Lili: Going as fast as I can.

Liam: Don't let me die here.

Lili: How's he doing?

Augur: He doesn't look good.

Reed: There's nothing we can do.

Augur: We have to get the hell out of here.

Reed: Or we'll die.

[ Controls blipping ] [ Engines rumbling ]

Lili: Augur! Augur!

Augur: He's gone.

[ Sniffing ]

A volunteer: Move, move, move!

[ Engines whining ]

Lili: All systems operational.

[ Shuttle engines accelerating ]

A volunteer: Move! Let's go!

[ Truck engine revving ]

[ Whoosh ]

Lili: What the hell is going on?

Augur: Welcome to Jaridia.

Lili: [ Gasping ] So, it wasn't the taelons. It was you. [ Sobbing ] How did you--

Augur: By sifting through your mind, Captain Marquette.

Reed: We took your memory of people, places, and things, and created the perfect illusion.

Augur: But it could only work if we had your complete trust.

Lili: So, the medical facility... Everything was my imagination, Just so that you could get me to fix the I.D. Drives. I trusted you!

Reed: Taelon energy is incompatible with ours, or we would have repaired the hyperaccelerator ourselves.

But I helped you solve that problem.

Augur: Yes, now, thanks to you, we have the prototype for an interdimensional drive.

Liam: Don't be alarmed, Captain. It will still take months to reach earth.

[ Gasping ] [ Gasping ]
