This is not the only way through to the one and only ending. This book has numerous paths and numerous endings. What I have provided here is my favourite route which has the best ending (and also the worst pun in FF history). Note also that this route requires a high Luck score (11 or 12) and good Skill score (9 or 10).
There are many other endings for you to explore, which I recommend you do, but here is mine:
