Accommodation

Accommodation prices in Kuala Lumpur are some of the lowest in the world whether you are travelling on a budget or indulging in a bit of luxury. For the purposes of this guide - I have divided the hotels up by area, price brackets and by what you could expect from your fellow guests.

Hotel rates changes as often as the weather in some parts of Britain and as a result - I have abandoned trying to list hotel rates. Click on the banners on this page to access up-to-date real-time rates and availability.

Generally, most of the city’s international chain properties are located within the Golden Triangle commercial district (hence they are grouped differently on this page), whilst budget accommodation tend to be dotted around the city.

Most budget travellers arriving in KL usually head for Chinatown, especially with the current train and bus stations located at opposite ends of the district. There are plenty of hotels and lodges to choose from and booking is rarely necessary unless you are intent on staying at the more popular budget hotels like the Coliseum or Traveller’s Station. Tourism Malaysia offices are trying to improve their list of budget accommodation but this is where feedback from you reading this would be particularly helpful.

Areas of KL also worth exploring for accommodation are Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (or Jalan TAR - for short) and the Chow Kit areas. These two districts are relatively close to each other and a little further north from Chinatown. However, walking between them with backpacks is probably not a great idea – unless you fancy losing a stone in weight by sweating. Some 'Hotels' in Chinatown, Jalan TAR and Chow Kit (and indeed many other parts of KL) are little more than 'brothels' (that goes without saying with most cities) but I have tried my best not to list these.

If you are arriving by train it may also be worth heading away from the city towards Brickfields, as there are a few hotels offering reasonable rates. You will be placed only minutes further away from the city but there is the efficient LRT and also plenty of buses plying the 3-minute route between Brickfields and Central Market.

There is an Accommodation Office located behind the main train station should you be completely stuck for the night but a wiser option may be to budget-up a grade and you may be surprised to find many fellow backpackers taking advantage of the excellent exchange rates at some of the city’s finer hotels.

All hotels listed below are air-conditioned unless specified. Hotels that are baby-friendly or provide access for the disabled have also been noted.
